Green Day released Nimrod in 1997. It was a huge hit in America, but did not have the same effect over here. When asked to describe their music by a friend I struggled to provide a definition. Their music takes lessons from all music styles I have listened to! It is that cult teen sound that gets it into the cd player of every common room in the land and gets people singing along to lyrics they didn’t think they knew! Even Buffy the Vampire Slayer has featured their music! The band has achieved phenomenal success all over the world, and even in Japan! This may be down to their use of sublime lyrics with superbly mastered melodies that appeal to the ears as well as the mind and heart. Nimrod has 18 tracks, 19 if you have the Japanese version! Straight from the first track you can hear their distinctive mix of different styles, as I will guide you through the album!
*Nice guys finish last As the song starts you can almost imagine a late 70’s punk band ready to explode into anarchistic shouting, but instead you are treated to that unmistakable voice we have come to know and love!
*Hitchin’ a ride This is one of the most popular tracks on the album. A rousing tune with a superb riff flowing from beginning to end that gives it a thump along quality and head banging opportunities!
*The grouch This is one of my favorite tracks on the album! It is a fast paced song that contrasts with the thumping one before it! Definitely a favorite in college!
*Redundant Slower paced but lyrically sublime as usual!
*Scattered*all the time*worry rock*platypus*uptight*last ride in*jinx*Haushinka*Takeback* More of the same high quality tracks!
*King for a day A little something different with a certain circus sound! A great song again never the less!
*Good Riddance (Time of your life) Probably the best known of all Green Day songs. This is the slower but probably most meaningful song on the album! It is a supreme song with excellent lyrics such as “Another turning point a fork stuck in the road…..” “Its not a question but a lesson learned in time…”
This album is one I cherish in my collection and I will play it until I drop! At the end of a long day there is no better album I would rather listen to!
