American acts like Interpol and The Killers who currently harbour a guilty crush on the luminous charms of British indie. Such Anglophilic sentiments appear to be mostly courtesy of bandleader Murray Lightburn, whose warm, swoonworthy vocal delivery is pitched somewhere between the warm croon of Morrissey and Damon Albarn caught at his most nakedly earnest. But it would be unfair to dismiss "Lost in the Plot" or "Expect the Worst/'Cos She's A Tourist" onthe basis of geography alone, particularly as so often, they threaten to match and occasionally overwhelm the originals from which they draw inspiration. An extended line-up that includes a three-piece horn section, The Brebeuf Brass, as well as violin, sax, and double bass brings an fullness of sound to songs like "Pinned Together, Falling Apart"--and Lightburn's refreshingly irony-free delivery leads to some truly lump-in-throat moments: "I have never cried in anybody's arms," he sings on "The Death Of All The Romance", "The way I have often cried in yours."--Louis Pattison

Advantages: Fresh sound, one of the best albums this year. Disadvantages: Not heard enough on the radio

And they still managed to get quite a good audience despite clashing with brian wilson! the lead singer's voice is impressive, soft yet melodic which is unusual for a guy in this day and age. with the two girls in the group doing backing the sound they produce is such a welcome change from all the samey songs that have been released in the last year. The best song by far is "we can have it", the haunting melodies are unforgetable. defiantley a must have album.

Album Notes
While the Dears are not a textbook goth band, this Canadian collective's second release, NO CITIES LEFT, burns with the despondent, desperate melodrama implied by the tag. The opener, "We Can Have It," blazes with angst as singer Murray A. Lightburn half-weeps "You never said I'd see you again." Lightburn's velvety lilt unabashedly channels Morrissey, though duets with singer Natalia Yanchak recall the tongue-in-cheek duels between Calvin Johnson and Amelia Fletcher of Heavenly. Cabaret horns and chamber strings characterize the sultry soap opera "Expect the Worst/'Cos She's a Tourist" and the Muzak funk of "Never Destroy Us." The Dears' brand of brooding manifests in extended pop symphonies that update the sounds of Pulp and the Smiths, and their Britpop/cabaret hybrid does bring to mind a stylish scene of black tattered suits swaying to the rhythm of a Las Vegas production number.
