image as the English Janis Joplin, a misrepresentation which does scant justice to her musical legacy. Denny was the queen of British rock-folk but the crystal clarity of her voice makes her one of the great English female vocalists of all time and this anthology of her recorded work attests to her ability. Denny fronted two of the folk scene's most widely respected groups, Fotheringay and Fairport Convention, before becoming a solo artist and this two-disk, 34-track collection moves intelligently through her career from the early Fairport days where she first linked with Richard Thompson--whose thoughtful, tasteful guitar playing illuminates many of her finest moments--through to the heavily orchestrated material of albums likeRendezvous. There is one unreleased track, a demo of "Stranger To Himself" recorded at Denny's home in Byfield, that only adds to her legendary status. --Mike Pattenden

Advantages: One of the best of the original Brit-punk albums Disadvantages: A very direct set of songs that will certainly offend the humourless
Someone somewhere (I can't remember who or when) once wrote that NoMore Heroes was "the angriest album ever recorded". That was something of an exaggeration, in my view; one or two much more furious albums do spring to mind. 'Contemptuous' seems to me a more appropriate adjective. Yep, 'contemptuous' sounds about right... as do 'filthy' and 'obscene'. All the more surprising then that in the autumn of 1977 this album got to within a hairsbreadth of the top of the UK Album Chart, and stayed there for months. These were clearly strange days.
NoMore Heroes was the second album released by the Stranglers, a band that came to prominence on the back of 'punk rock', though more by accident than design: the Stranglers weren't really 'punk' so much as just plain 'pissed off', though they managed to express their contempt for everything ...
Advantages: Solid album with some great tracks, bonus tracks Disadvantages: Controversial nature of some tracks may put some off
, before presumeably the group realised that people require heroes of some sort. When all the talking about the lyrics are done, it's still a brilliant track, with the refrain of "nomore heroes anymore" being one of the most memorable parts to any Stranglers track.
Also on the album are the older track Peasant In The Big Sh!tty, which the group concedes would probably have fit better onto Rattus Norvegicus, given it's dark and brooding nature, but that can't take away from the amazingly creepy and effective voice of Dave, nor can the importance of his keyboard work here, with it's rather bizarre lyrics, penned by Burnel, which basically relate to acid trips. I don't know why, possibly just because of the wonderful way in which Greenfield delivers the title line, but I really do enjoy this song, as, to a lesser extent, I enjoy Dave's other ...
Advantages: Covers darkness around the face Disadvantages: Expensive
I hadn?t actually heard about this product until a couple of years ago when a work colleague asked me to purchase one for her at the Duty Free shop in the airport as I was due to go abroad on holiday. She told me that she couldn?t be without it and that it covered a multitude of sins on her face each morning. I didn?t think too much more about it until a few weeks ago. You see, I do suffer from thread veins on the cheeks of my face and I have tried just about every concealer on the market but nothing has really been very effective. When applying my makeup I would keep thinking ?how on earth can I get a concealer that will do the job to cover this redness??
So, a couple of weeks ago, whilst visiting Salisbury I visited Beauty Fulltime, a shop which I found several weeks ago (see my Nina Ricci Lipstick review) and asked if they had ...

Recorded between September 1968 & June 1976. Includes liner notes by Clinton Heylin. Digitally remastered by Jeff Willens (Universal Mastering Studios-East). This anthology is a fitting tribute to the towering artistry of Sandy Denny. Not only was she a heartbreakingly riveting singer, she also composed timeless songs, including the one that closes this two-disc set and lends it its title. These 34 songs are drawn from her work with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, and her own jeweled solo albums--THE NORTH STAR GRASSMAN & THE RAVENS, SANDY, and LIKE AN OLD FASHIONED WALTZ are all enduring works of grace and beauty. With the combination of her British Isles heritage and a love for American folk music, Sandy Denny developed a voice of her own fairly early on, first flourishing in Fairport Convention, then starting out on her own in a variety of settings. All of the phases of her 10-year career (she died in 1978) are represented here, making this an essential collection. Two other sets available are the three-disc WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIME GOES, and THE BEST OF SANDY DENNY, on a single disc.
