Puff Daddy's first album release in 97 coincided with the death of his right hand man and best friend Notorious BIG. Some might say the death of BIG helped the sales, i would tend to agree. It was originally due to be called Hell Up In Harlem - just a little fact there for you!
Multiple awards and singles released, this abum got to no1 in the states. Its a must have for any rap/hip hop fan and opened many doors for Puff. As you may remember back in the day he used to get slated for sampling 80s tunes but if they sound good, get on board
Victory - Features Busta Rhymes and Notorious BIG and was one of the most expensive videos of all time. Dennis Hopper is in it and its a short film about a criminal lokking to escape the city but being watched and hunted for TV. Sounds like a film ive seen. The tune is actually great, very intimidating orchestra and haunting vocals. Excellent Been Around The World - Features Mase & Notorious BIG. Samples Lets Dance by David Bowie and Lisa Stansfield's Been Around The World and again another good tune. Also another really good video with Wyclef Jean and Jennifer Lopez starring in a short film about a princess being kidnapped. What You Gonna Do? - Not a wonderful track this one. A filler with no well known samples and no features. Dont Stop What Youre Doing - Features Lil Kim and is a really feel good track sampling Dont Stop The Music by Yarbrough and Peoples. Godo bass line and good beats. Good all round song, even though not much different from the original Do You Know - Features Kelly Price and samples Diana Ross' Theme from Mahogany. Add a rap to that and your done. Easy. Catchy tune only because you already know the chorus Young G's - Features Notorious BIG, Kelly Price & Jay Z. An average tune which could have been so much better had the production been right. Its a shame these two wont be able to rap together again but the chance was there for an amazing tune. Not to be im afraid. I Love You Baby - Features Black Rob and is poor track. Skip past this one. It just adds nothing to the album Its All About The Benjamins - Features Lox, Lil Kim & Notorious BIG. Excellent track, didnt get the recognition it desereved but fantastic production. Theres a rock version out there somewhere which i think has the Foo Fighters in it which is equally as good. Check that out aswell Pain - Features Carl Thomas but its a massive come down from the previous track. Samples Jesse by Roberta Flack. Is This The End - Features Carl Thomas, Ginuwine & Twista. First part of a 2 part song series (the second one on the next album) Twista delivery is spot on and really quick and a catchy chorus. I Got The Power - Features the Lox. Weird one this, big beats but just doesnt hook me in. Maybe the title immediately puts the other 'I got the power' track in your head and you cant get it out!? Friend - Features Foxy Brown. Slow tempo, good chorus but thats about it Senorita - Poor. No features and again looks like it was done to fill up the record I'll Be Missing You - Features 112 & Faith Evans. Probably his best know track, no1 for ages around the world and samples Every Breath You Take by the Police. A classic song in memory of BIG. Im a bit bored of it now but you cant knock its credentials Cant Nobody Hold Me Down - Features Mase. Another excellent cult club track. Samples the message by grandmaster flash and just an overall top track
All in all really good album, the stats say it for themselves 4 singles released and the lowest any of the got to was number 2. Great videos (although you wont see them on here, maybe a re-release with a dvd should be next!?) And the album itself was number 1. You'll get it for a good price, live the dream.
