Advantages: There really are a couple of stunning tracks and it is essentially the same Dolls sound Disadvantages: You get the impression that many of the tracks are recycled versions of better songs...
answer the conundrum of who did exactly kill Amanda. The answer is possibly her home grown pretentiousness or perhaps she topped herself whilst realising just how bad some of her solo stuff is.
Anyway, back to the Dolls, and their third release, 'No Virginia...' which cannot technically be defined as their third record. You see, 'No Virginia' isn't anything new or utterly original but that was never the albums intention as its eleven tracks are a compilation of B-Sides and forgotten material from album number deux, 'Yes, Virginia'. It's unfair to expect this particular release to offer something groundbreaking as the bands previous efforts, from the self titled debut and indeed the 'Yes' version of 'No'; both had room for promise and there was a significant jump in the right direction; 'The Dresden Dolls', as a CD, had a raw, rough feel ...
Advantages: Catchy riffs, intense and moody vocals Disadvantages: Songs drag on, too much repetition, lack of a real hook
The Kills are a two-piece blues/rock hybrid consisting of VV (Alison Mosshart) on vocals and Hotel (Jamie Hince) on vocals and guitar. Allegedly the union of two former pen pals The Kills have been doing the rounds for a while now, touring and writing in preparation for their first full-length release. Their energy filled live shows have gained them many fans in both their home country the US and over here in the UK. On the stages it?s just the two of them while in the background lingers a jet black, HAL like drum machine, the rock upon which all of The Kills songs are built.
Many of The Kills tracks have a lo-fi feel about them. Songs that have seemingly stolen the essence of a song from one of the old delta bluesmen and then revved up the guitar riff to sound like a hook from one of the classic Stooges songs. The Kills songs ...
Advantages: A Masterpiece of Cinema Disadvantages: Very violent, left wanting more
Quentin Tarantino does it again. He has created a masterpiece of cinema in Kill Bill.
As plot-lines go this is fairly flimsy, although none-the-less very intruiging. The film starts in a wedding chapel where a horrendous bloodbath has occurred. The Bride (Uma Thurman) heavily pregnant has been savagely beaten and is about to be shot in the head.
It is probably one of the best openings of a film I have seen for some time, Thurman actually looks as though she has taken a beating, and it being quite a long first sequence your heart has time to start pounding quite hard before the film really begins.
I do not want to go into intricacies of the plot here all I shall say is that The Bride begins to wreak her revenge on those that brutally attempted to kill her in the first sequence of the movie. I knew all this before seeing the film ...
'No Wow' is the second album from London based duo The Kills. Recorded in just three months in the sleepy town of Benton Harbour, Michigan, the album sees the band continue with the stripped back indie rock sound of their acclaimed debut 'Keep On Your Mean Side', taking inspiration from their quick rise into the media spotlight throughout 2003 and 2004.
