Advantages: Great jazz tunes from the Golden Age
Disadvantages: None

...-performed and fluid love song. Sadly the female singer with the honey-dripping tones is not credited on this CD. There's Harry James and his Orchestra with a waltz time piece called Carnival of Vencie, with some trumpet playing that is straight out of the trumpet section of a classical orchestra. There's Moonlight in Vermont sung by Ella Fitzgerald. If you haven't heard her sing, hear this song and you'll know why Ella Fitzgerald is so well-loved to this day by people from all over the year. Prisoner of Love by Teddy Wilson is good, solid jazz fare. A simple rhythm, slightly muted trumpet and lilting piano. Eventually, the music is joined by a female singer with a voice that is slightly reminiscent of Mae West. Closing Hour Blues by Meade Lux Lewis is a blues jazz cross-over. Somehow the crackles from the original master recording just add a little... Read review

The True Sound Of The Sixties
Review of Pet Sounds - Beach Boys (The) by MCFruitbat

Advantages: Brian Wilson's best work
Disadvantages: Originally released in Mono

...It is easy to overlook the contribution of Brian Wilson to 20th Century popular music - most modern rock critics explain the explosion of pop music in the sixties almost exclusively in terms of The Beatles and The Roilling Stones with occasional nods to the influence of Motown. In fact, by the time Pet Sounds was released in 1966 it was far and away the most sophisticated, ground-breaking pop record ever made. That it would be displaced from this mantle so soon by The Beatles' monumental Sgt Pepper album does not detract from Pet Sounds significance. Pet Sounds pushed the Beatles to the edge of their creative limits. Paul McCartney in particular heard Pet Sounds and instantly knew that the bar had been raised. The styles introduced in Sgt Pepper have been done and redone by hundreds of bands since, but there is no album that feels even... Read review

The Classic
Review of Pet Sounds - Beach Boys (The) by x_helix_x

Advantages: The classic album you have to have!
Disadvantages: None

...With worldwide sales topping 100million, a place in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and having an album as great as this under their belts it is safe to so that the Beach Boys are true musical legends. Their sunny, fresh Calafornian sound has its origins way back in the 1950s when Brian Wilson taught his younger brothers to sing. Growing up in the Los Angeles in the suburb of Hawthorne; they spent a lot of time learning to harmonise; vocals are of course the most important element in the Beach Boys sound. It wasn't long before their cousin Mike Love joined the group. They spent their time singing carols or singing along to songs on the radio. The line-up was completed in 1961 when Al Jardine, Brian's friend from high school, joined the group. They settled on the name of the Pendletones and set about trying to record songs. Their first...
