Melanie C was the second Spice Girl to release a solo album after Geri Halliwell’s Schizo-Phonic (Geri left the all conquering Spice Girls in May 1998). And Melanie C’s debut album doesn’t disappoint!
Many people say that Melanie ‘Sporty Spice’ C has the best voice out of all the Spice Girls and this album only strengthens their theory! ‘Northern Star’ shows that Ms Chisholm has a very diverse, distinctive and strong voice. The album also shows that sporty is respected in the music world.
On this album Melanie worked with some very impressive people William Orbit (Who’s worked with Madonna and All Saints) and Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes (a member of the American R&B super-group ‘TLC’) these are to name just a few, the credits on this album are very impressive!
This album is much more serious than any of the previous Spice Girls albums, it showcases Melanie’s true writing and singing ability. No bubblegum pop here just songs that are true to life. You can’t really say that this album is rock or pop or R&B because it is a mixture of all three, which works surprisingly well!
Highlights on Northern Star are the album opener ‘GO’ which is one of the songs co-written and produced by William Orbit, ‘If that were me’ which takes an interesting view on homelessness and the R&B hip-hop influenced ‘Never be the same again’ which features a rap from Lisa Left Eye Lopes.
The worst song on the album is ‘Going Down’ which is Melanie’s attempt at rock, although this is not a bad tune either!

Overall this album is extremely entertaining, if you like any of the songs Melanie has released off this album I strongly recommend you go out and but it NOW!
