Advantages: It's different to anything else released by the band, therefore deserves a listen Disadvantages: maybe alienate a few fans
This is a very difficult album to review for me... the Priest were one of the first metal bands I became a fan of back in my teen days in 1978, so I've been with them every step of the way for the last 30 years now. Over that time they've released several classic albums... Stained Class, Killing Machine, British Steel, Screaming For Vengeance, Painkiller, and even the last album 'Angel Of Retribution'. They've also stuck out a couple of average albums... Turbo, and Ram It Down come to mind... but this new one... heck, this one had me stumped from the day they announced the concept (what were they thinking of?), until I actually bought it and gave it a few listens.
Based loosely on the life and prophecies of Nostradamus, it's a double CD. A lot of it sounds like your typical JudasPriest material, but a lot of it is far from it. There ...
Advantages: 2 hours of headbanging classics Disadvantages: none unless you can't tune your air guitar properly
JudasPriest.... so what are they all about then? They're a classic heavy metal band, a product of the heavily industrialised Black Country area near Birmingham (along with the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Slade etc), playing a form of Heavy rock that is typically British in style, with some fast and furious songs, some slow and melodic, and a few with a bit of both. Add to the mix Rob Halford's massive vocal range, the twin lead guitars, and pounding drums and bass and you have a recipe for something a bit loud and more than a bit special! As for the band image - it's almost always been about leather, studs, chains etc etc, slightly camp, tongue in cheek, and a more than a wee bit over the top.
A bit of history first. The main line up of the band came together in the early 70's and quickly garnered a reputation as a superb ...
Advantages: Some TRUE gems found here... Disadvantages: Some tracks maybe remind to much of each other.
The year is 1991 and it has been 17 years since the release of their debut album "Rocka Rolla" and now once again they are back again with Rob Halford as frontman with "Painkiller". "Brittish steel", "Point of entry" and "Defender of faith" were albums that were released in the early 80s and are still today considered by a lot if people to be on of the best heavy-metal albums out to date. Their two latest albums before this one were not as successful as those and now the band really needs a killer album to increase the falling popularity of JudasPriest. Is this album up for the job? The answer is simply YES!!
The album starts with the titletrack and it sounds better than anything they ever done before! This track is fastpaced, very aggressive and Rob does a hell of a job on the vocals, the first solo is absolutely brilliant ... "THIS ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Don Airey, Ian Hill, Rob Halford, Pete Whitfield, Scott Travis. Audio Mixers: Darius Van Helfteren; Attie Bauw. Any lingering fears held by Judas Priest fans about the group's reunion with vocalist Rob Halford being a short-lived exercise in nostalgia need look no further than 2008's NOSTRADAMUS. This epic two-disc concept album represents a bold move for the leather-clad metal gods. With his previous lyrics for such Priest classics as "The Ripper" and "Beyond The Realms Of Death," Halford has already demonstrated a flair for dramatic storytelling. NOSTRADAMUS takes the life of the endlessly debated 16th-century prophet and propels it into a body of music that incorporates orchestration, sweeping keyboards, Latin-sung vocals, acoustic guitars, and (gasp) choirs. In the process, old-school Judas Priest fans are served a plentiful dish that picks up where 1990's PAINKILLER left off.
Album Reviews
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.54) - "[T]he entire work drags you in with its own irresistible gravity. Striking hooks and stirring pieces of instrumentation make themselves apparent from within the stately march of their surrounds..." Q (Magazine) (p.135) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[G]loriously over-the-top..." Record Collector (magazine) (p.95) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "NOSTRADAMUS is dark, mystical, complex and occasionally acoustic, and the Priest write around Halford's aging voice well, emphasizing power over range."
