For a debut album this isn`t half bad! This woman reminds me a little of Sheryl Crow to look at…admittedly from a distance and I do think that Anastacia is better looking and that`s from a womans point of view.. and what a tattoo to have!!!
The album all 50:34mins of it is a varied musical journey with a real feel good factor. It is easy going and good stuff. I admire her voice and find her a little similar to Macy Gray (apparently she does a really good impression of her!), Gabrielle, at times and occasionally Whitney Houston..ish!! So if you like any of the afore mentioned girls, give this a listen.
The opening track is the title track "Not that Kind". Nice waca chaka guitar (if you know what I mean!!) Funky, not too pacey, rather 70`s feel. Makes you want to tap your feet and boogie on down!!
"I`m outta love" dance number that made this woman known to me anyway. Nice opening, again rather 70`s funky feel. Tina Turner..ish, Aretha
Franklin. Her voice has attitude. Another toe tapper, good one to do aerobics to, if that`s your bag… I must admit that I have strutted my stuff to this track on a number of occasions recently in the vain hope that some exercise is better than none!! Well at least the intention to get fit is there!!
"Cowboys and Kisses". More laid back track this time, no where near as funky as the other tracks. It has a vague C&W feel, but don`t let that put you off, it is still rather rocky. Powerful underlying bass and guitar lines. Heavy use of backing vocals in this one.
"Who`s gonna stop the rain" Nice acoustic guitar opening, subdued backing vocals and then Anastacia enters. Relaxed and mellow feel, strong resemblance to another track I have heard a few years ago in the string idea…wish I could remember what that was! The track flows along quite gently but it`s not one of my favouries although nice use of vocal ab libs.
"Love is alive" Space ship has landed in the opening of this track…heavy funky track reminds me of Starsky and Hutch and Huggy Bear…which I suppose will only mean something to you if you can remember the series!! Remember that car..with the red stripe down the side…always wished my Dad would get one just like it..car that is..from the series…Starsky..oh never mind!
"I ask of you" WARNING do not listen to this if you are feeling love sick, just been dumped etc.. This particularly reminds me of Whitney…not vocally but in musical content…also like Anita Baker. This actually made me stop when I first played this track..I stood and looked all longing out of the window and had a good old day dream. This is the sort of track I could imagine being played at wedding receptions as the first dance! Its gushing, romantic, cliched and absolutely wonderful!!! Oops there I go again..day dreaming…ah! That’s better!
"Wishing well" Acoustic opening again, reminicent of track 4 in its opening. More vocal ad libs and backing vocals. Laid back again easy listening. Nice track! "Everybody shines in the wishing well"
"Made for loving you" Tina Turner feel again, funky.. strut your stuff again! More 70`s influence in style and instruments..
"Black Roses" Is this a love song..may be but one with a more bitter strand. Suppose you could have guessed with a title like Black Roses..like the guitar line in this, sort of a Santana, Fun Loving Criminals feel to it. Fairly typical slow track with a souly feel to it!
"Yo Trippin" Dancy track again, back with the waca chaka guitar..boogie nights are back to stay. No, no more exercise music..I`m feeling guilty having just stuffed myself with sweet and sour chicken from the take away..
"One more chance" back to the warning from track 6…not to be listened to but highly emotional individuals sat in on their own! Use of electric piano, crashing cymbals that send shivers down your spine. Then add the soaring strings for more emotional impact and don’t forget the lyrics which pull at your heart strings…oh, wipe that tear away and move on! Not for the wedding reception this time!!!!!!!
"Same old story" Piano opening with strings in the back ground. Moves along at a shuffle-type pace. More vocal ad libs with backing vocals. Easy going again.
Anyway, in conclusion then. This is a fine album from a woman with a fine voice. It is reminiscent of much you will have heard before but that is not necessarily a bad thing as it makes that album easy to listen to. Can`t see me becoming tired of this album as is contains quite a nice mix of styles and pace.

Advantages: Is cheaper to buy the album than just the cd singles of the released tracks. Disadvantages: the released tracks are the only decent songs on the album
