‘Not That Kind’ is the first album from the gorgeous Anastacia. This is review 3/3 for Anastacia’s albums for me. I absolutely LOVE her and if you’ve read any of my other reviews on her albums then I expect that you already knew that. I do tend to babble on about how wonderful she is, so I am going to try and tone this review down… a little bit anyway!
Well its been a while since I wrote my last review and the last one was on Ani’s second album ‘Freak of Nature’. So this album is great by anybody’s standards, although compared to her latest album self-titled ‘Anastacia’ I don’t think that this album is that great. Don’t get me wrong it is still an amazing album but if anybody has heard her latest album then you will know what I am talking about because that is just fantastic!
So what are the songs like on this album? I think that they are all fantastic and what is great about Ani is that she writes 99% of her songs herself. The only songs on this album that she didn’t write are ‘Who’s Gonna Stop the Rain’ and ‘Wishing Well’, which isn’t that bad considering that was a new artist at this time. Even though Anastacia didn’t write the 2 songs she still puts 150% effort into singing them and I absolutely love ‘Who’s Gonna Stop the Rain’ both because the lyrics are amazing and so is the way that she executes the song.
Track 1 – Not that Kind
I really love this song. It is both funky and has explosive vocals that
we have all come to expect from Ani. Some people might think that Ani is ‘over the top’ with some of her singles but I don’t think so at all, in fact I think that it is great that someone with such a great voice isn’t afraid to shout about it. This is a great sing-a-long song from Ani. But then again I think that all of her songs are great sing a long songs whether they are ballads or pop songs. This is a really catchy song so I give it 9/10.
Track 2 – I’m Outta Love
This is one of my favourite songs on the album. I think that this is probably the catchiest song on the album and talk about great lyrics and vocals. This was Ani’s first release and if I remember correctly was in the charts for a rather long time indeed. This song is one of the best examples of Anastacia’s great vocal range and shows us that she can hit all of the high notes but not over do it like I think many artists would. Therefore I give this song 10/10.
Track 3 – Cowboys & Kisses
I also really like this song. Can you see that pattern developing? So far I am really liking the songs on this albums. I think that the lyrics from all of her songs mean something to everyone on matter which way that you interpret them. I don’t think that this is one of Ani’s strongest songs and to some might seem a little bland. So because this song isn’t quite up to the standards of her other songs and the vocals of other songs I am going to give it a rather modest 8/10.
Track 4 – Who’s Gonna Stop the Rain
Wow! This song is incredible and the lyrics are something that any artist would be proud to sing. I absolutely adore this song. I don’t quite know why but it just seems to hit me and I get a lump in my throat ever time I listen to it. I think that the writers of this song are geniuses. I was slightly surprised that Ani didn’t have anything to do with the writing of this song, but it sounds like she defiantly feels what the song is about and it is great to hear her interpretation of the song. A great song 10/10.
Track 5 – Love is Alive
This is a great uplifting soul type song. It is another really catchy easy-listening song, which is a great way to cheer you up! There is a really funky sound to this song, which mostly comes from the base. We get another glimpse of Ani’s powerful voice, but again she doesn’t over do anything in this song. A really catchy 9/10.
Track 6 – I ask of You
This isn’t one of the best songs on the album in my view. We get to hear the emotional side of Ani’s voice. I can remember hearing one of the finalists of the last American Idol series singing this song. I thought that it was quite good at the time, but doesn’t even compare to the way in which Ani sings this song. I can appreciate the way in which Anastacia sings this song, but I don’t think that it is the kind of song that suits her voice. A rather disappointing 7/10 from me.
Track 7 – Wishing Well
This is the worst song on the album for me. In think that it is far to repetitive and that’s all I can really say on the matter. The vocals are great as always but because it is so repetitive I think that it spoils the whole song. 6/10.
Track 8 – Made for Lovin’ You
I can remember hearing this song from somewhere but I couldn’t remember where for the life of me; Until recently. There was a countdown of the greatest adverts on channel 4 a couple of weeks ago and this song was part of one of the car adverts. I didn’t really pay much attention to the advert so I don’t know what car it was advertising; I was just thinking how great the song was. It is very catchy and I love it. It is a great addition to the album. Much better that the last song so its gonna have to be a 10/10.
There are great lyrics in this song. It is a real easy-listener and is still quite catchy although quite slow. The great range of Ani’s voice is again shown off in this great song. I really like this album and apart from the 1 song, they are all really good! So far anyway! 9/10.
Track 10 – Yo Trippin’
Another catchy up-beat song. There isn’t really much more I can say. It is great to listen to but isn’t a lot different to some of the other songs on the album and I feel that it could be a bit better. 7/10.
Track 11 – One More Chance
Another great ballad with both great lyrics and great vocals from Anastacia. The song has a great chorus and Anastacia uses her voice well here once more. I like this song and is great if your in a dull lethargic mood. Well worth a listen. 8/10
Track 12 – Same Old Story
This is again one of the best songs on the album. It is the longest song on the album, but you can’t help but tap your feet and sing along. The chorus is quite catchy and the lyrics are very good and meaningful. So the rating is the same old story of 8/10.
My Op.
I think that this is the weakest of the three albums. I like 11/12 of the songs, but I feel that Wishing Well really lets the whole album down. If you were looking to buy an Ani album then I would say that you should put this album last in the list. So the conclusion if the 3 albums together from my point of view is that Ani is one if the greatest artists out there today. At the moment I can’t actually sleep without listening to one of the albums, which seems a little bit sad. However, I am totally enthralled by Anastacia.
This album gets a 8/10 from me with just a few weaker tracks that I think were only used as fillers.
Thanks for the read, Cheers Uncle Slug : )
