This was one of the first records I purchased on vinyl. I was browsing in my local independent store, and stumbled across the sleeve, depicting a fairground, and some colourful dots. I had heard the band name, but not their music, so I put the record back in the rack and left the shop. An hour or so later I got the urge to rush back and purchase the record. And so I did. I caught the bus home and laid the vinyl on my parents turntable. And listened to this record. 5 times in a row. Back in 1998 I had never heard any emo / pop music before so it took a while to sink in, but when it did. BAM. This record took over.
A couple of weeks later this record was established as the soundtrack of my summer, a summer spent on work experience in a place I hated and worse, but this LP along with a couple of others helped get me through the bad days, and made weekends of wandering outside all that more enjoyable. From start to finish, this record is wonderful. It kicks in with "Is This Thing On?", driving through with Davey von Bohlen's simple and repetetive lyrics and bizarre lispy voice taking over. The guitars are played fast and urgently, repeating riffs over and over and driving the song on. The bass is warm and thick and has a mind of its own. And the band charges on - mixing up faster tracks with the occasional slower tracks such as "Red & Blue Jeans", utilising melodies that sink in and stay in your head for days. Everything is structured in what appears to be a simple way, but there is depth to these songs, and I could never grow tired of listening to this - a record that oozes the summer and innocence.
There is not a bad track on here, nothing comes close to even average. Emo pop may not be a genre that anyone knows how to play in 2005, but in 1997/98, bands like the Promise Ring, Braid and even the Get Up Kids were on to something. Something that will never be repeated. Killer.
