Advantages: Beautifully written Disadvantages: Not quite as good as her debut
Florida in an attempt torun away and to forget his past as Coal Run's great hope. There he stays until a mysterious note calls him home to deal with the release from prison of a former college team mate of his, a man sentenced for beating his wife nearly to death.
"Coal Run" is a week in the life of the former Coal Run residents, leading up to the release from prison of Reese Raynor. It shows how the whole community can be affected by such a thing and how, many years on, they are still haunted by the loss of their former town, no matter how hard they have tried to put it behind them and get on. As with any small town, there is love and heartbreak, life and death and even a local hero can have a skeleton or two in his closet.
Whilst not as immediately compelling as "Back Roads", O'Dell has again given us a slice of small town America ...
Advantages: Visually nice, Affleck does fine. Disadvantages: Dull, generic plotting, boring action, lack of originality.
Giamatti (Harvey Pekar in American Splendor) in a relatively major role. The one actor I couldn't entirely get my head around was Michael C Hall as an FBI agent, who appeared to just be playing a slightly more wired version of his character David Fisher from Six Feet Under.

The first person narration is great for keeping you in the centre of the story, as its Zoey?s perspective we read from and she is pretty much the centre of the story. Reading from a 17 year old girl?s point of view can be a little frustrating at times however, as the writers have made sure the reader is reminded of Zoey?s youth quite frequently. The use of slang and the attempt to sound ?young? is a bit grating. But thankfully this comes mainly from the secondary characters that use words such as ?totally? to display the fact they are actually just high school students, even though the things they are going through are far from the norm for students ...
