I thought it was about time that i wrote an irion maiden album review . My only problem is i couldent decide which one to write about and then it struck me why not one of the best ones they made. I bought this album about five years ago and it cost me £ 15.99. At first i thought this was a bit steep but then decided to give it a listen before i take it back and its still on my shelf today although its a bit worn by now as i have listend to it so many times. I must admit this is not everyones cup of tea but i dont think anyone can argue that Iron maiden are one of the founding bands of brit metal and may i add still rocking on after 25 years in the busines.
This album was released in 1982 and was the first to include bruce dickenson on lead vocals replacing Paul Di anno who left becouse of his uncontrollable drinking problems. Some may be interested to know that Di anno recoverd from alcholism a few years ago and is currently touring the country playing at townhalls and universities with a new band and material.
The fresh almost operatic vocals of dickenson made the album a success with a new musical direction toward the hevier side and the pure charisma of dickenson at the helm The album went straight to tho top of the album charts and stayed there for a considerable amont of time (it was a lot harder to get a number one album at the time unlike today when anyone can do it) and possibly helped to make them a houshold name as i havent come accross anyone who hasent heard of them in one shape or form for quite a while.
Right now its time for me to tell you about the tracks on the album.
#01..... Invaders. What a great start to any album. The lyrics are just fantastic "Longboats have been sighted and the engines are for war many nordic fighting men thier swords and sheilds gleam in the sun". How many bands can you name who could get away with that.
#02..... Children of the dammned. A rather slow chilling number this one you need to give it a couple of listens to really appreciate this one and the guitar solo is fantastic.
#03..... The prisoner " i'm not a number i'm a free man" A great track this one and also one of the better known tracks on the album. Also a quirky little track wich always seems to make me chuckle.
#04..... 22 acacia avenue. " when your felling down depresed and lonly i know a place where we can go" The followup to Charlotte the Harlot another great track with great vocals and fantastic guitars.
#05.....The number of the beast " woe to you oh earth and sea for the devil sends the beast with wrath Let him who hath understanding recon the number of the beast for it is a human number. Its number is six hundred and sixty six". What more can i say A biblical prophecy, astoundig vocals and probably their best known track to date.
#06..... Run to the hills. A chilling description of the atrocities inflicted during the American / Indian wars told from both points of view. a masterfull track with a seedier underbelly that makes you think a little.
#07..... Gangland. The vocals are good and the track presents itself well but maybe not one of the better tracks on the album and i feel it gets overshadowed by the previous track and the next.
#08..... Hallowed be thy name. A great end to the album this track is a prayer of a condemed man who is about to be hung a long epic story that is slow to start but soon explodes into the familiar maiden sound.
Thats it the end of my journey into the realm of Iron Maiden for now. I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as i enjoy listening to the album. And may i just add that it can be found quite cheap these days at about £9.99. wich i feel is a fantastic bargain.
Thanks for reading.
