Woe to you o earth and sea, for the Devil sends forth the beast with wrath, because he knows the time is short… Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast for it is a human number, its number is six hundred and sixty six. Revelations 13:18.
After two studio albums front man Paul Di anno left and was soon after replaced with the Samson lead Bruce Dickenson. In 1982 the band released their third studio album the number of the beast which became their most popular album and probably one of the most controversial albums ever with religious groups branding the band as Devil worshipers and Satanists. On hindsight this worked in Maidens favour gaining them extra publicity. With Bruce at the helm new and interesting things begin to happen and he manages to bring the band forward with a superb vocal range and fresh ideas which become apparent on this album.

Invaders.
What a great start to any album with a fast catchy intro and some great lyrics this song thunders at you from start to finish. One of my favourite songs on the album with the starting lyrics "longboats have been sighted and the armies march to war many Nordic fighting men their swords an shields gleam in the sun" let you know its going to be a rip roaring track. Dickenson's vocals are fantastic and you know straight away that the right decision was made in hiring him as lead vocals.
Children of the damned. Based on the 1963 film Children of the damned this track tells the tale of the last child as he is being led to his death. This chilling song is quite gruesome in places describing the child feelings as he is being burned at the stake. With a slow intro and inspired lyrics followed by some chilling vocal this song always sends a shiver down my spine.
The prisoner. Based on the17 part series the prisoner starts with a great drum rhythm and some great guitar work lead into a fast paced track with some impressive guitar solos and some good vocals. This is a great track and catchy you will probably find yourself humming the tune long after hearing it.
22 Acacia avenue. This is the second part in a series of songs that started on the first album with Charlotte the harlot. This is a very creative song that comprises of three main parts that are quite different from one another that actually work well on the whole. You have to hear it a couple of times to appreciate how well it works and is a diverse piece that is also fun to listen to.
The number of the beast. What an amazing song and the first single from the album. The most recognised Maiden song ever that boasts some fantastic guitar riffs and vocals. The band originally approached Vincent Price to do the intro but was told he would not do it for less than £25.000. The band then heard of a radio presenter who read ghost stories on his show. This classically trained actor had no interest in Iron Maiden but agreed to do it when asked to do it in the style of Vincent Price. Sorry just thought id give you a bit of a history lesson.
Run to the hills. This was the second single from the album and was also a massive hit and one of the bands more recognised songs. It's also an unusual track that splits in two to tell both sides of the story being that of the Native American Indians and that of the invaders. I'm not a big fan of this song because it's probably the one song that I have heard the most. It still has some great vocals and a catchy chorus.
Gangland. Every album has a stinker and this is it. It's not up to the usual standard and seems a little out of place. It starts with some good drums but when you think it's going to get good it spirals of in another direction and is heavily influenced by a 1930s jazz style. In itself its not a terrible song just doesn't seem to belong on the album. Originally it was a choice of gangland or total eclipse for the album and they went for Gangland. Total eclipse was added in this 1998 re mastered version.
Total eclipse. This is a dark and brooding song about ecological disaster that fits in well with the dark theme of the album. Originally a b side it lost out to gangland but was added later on the re mastered version.
Hallowed be thy name. One of Maidens finest songs it's just fantastic vocally and lyrically describing the emotions of a condemned man hours away from his execution the powerful emotions are conveyed brilliantly you can almost feel the regret and sorrow. Such an inspired track and lyrically superior to anything I have heard before. Just amazing it's worth buying this album for this one song alone.
What an amazing album and is still one of Iron maidens best. I highly recommend this album as it is a pure classic and has not aged at all. You can find this album in most music stores from £5 to £11. Thank you for reading hope you enjoyed it as much as I have enjoyed writing it. Thanks again.

Just loved this album. I saw maiden at the liverpool empire just after the original release in the 80's. Wonderful on stage. So bizarre thinking back - it was real spinal tap stuff with the mechanical Eddie appearing on stage. Saw them again on the Next tour and Eddie just got bigger and bigger. I think he was inflatable that time, cant remember!
