Number of the Beast is perhaps the best Iron Maiden Studio album ever produced. It captures the heart and soul of what Iron maiden are about from the opening chord on invaders to the last drum beat at the end of hallowed be thy name. This album is simply a masterpiece.
In the early 1980's Iron Maiden were propelling themselevs into stardome. However they had to change vocalists from the falling apart drug ridden Paul Di'anno to the electrifying Bruce Dickinson just before the recording of this album. Bruce bourght the spark that shot them from a good band to superstars, with high powered vocal rythms and a voice that was so powerful it could encapulate any audience world wide. On stage Bruce added dynamite and energy to shows, not really seen before at gigs. Even bands such as Judas Priest and Ozzy who were at the top then couldnt compete with the marvellous bruce. This gave Maiden the formular to prepare this album.
The album begins with the explosive Invaders. Which has a very fast tempo and a catchy little guitar riff. Then the vocals kick in and you see that steve harris's band plus bruce are a match made in heaven. The album then shoots through a softer and slower Children of the damned, but even this has a classic metal tone, before the pace quickens with The Prisoner. 22 Acacai Avenu follows with a slighly chiling vocal line which goes into a powerful beat. The perfect track to build up for the albums most famous works. Number of the beast and Run to the hills.
Number of the beast hightens the idea that metal is the devils work and thus lead to several thousand people trying to get metal bands banded in the mid 80's. But the music is fantastic, the guitar line is simple yet hihgly effective, the vocals join in and then the drums before dramatic pauses and ongoing verses then the awsome chrous followed by a fantastic solo. Run to the HIlls has one of the most memorable guitar lines ever written and an intro no one forgets. Although it is simple is soon gets more complicated and the power of the guitars and bruces vocals reach perfection in the chorus. It is trully one of the ultimate rock songs.
Gangland and Total eclispe follow, although not as catchy and powerful in both meaning and performance the tracks are good metal songs and keep the album flowing. The final song is Hallowed be thy name. It matches fantastic lyrics and encompases church bells. Another unforgetable introduction to one of maidens first 7 minute plus tracks which they have become infamous for. You get to see a softer side to bruces voice during the intro which doesnt dissappiont and as the song keeps going it builds up to a brilliant climax solo and then keeps the powerful maiden riff driven mayhem going till the last chord and drum beat of the album. Ulterly fantastic.
There isnt much to compare this album to at the time however the likes of thin lizzy, deep purple, ozzy, motorhead, judas priest, all were made look amature for a time when this album was produced, and still today it is one of the best metal albums ever recorded and i do not beleive any future artists will be able to outdo it.
This record went on to ensipre several big bands such as metalica, nirvana and many thousands more over the last 25 years and is indeed a masterpiece.
