Advantages: 18 Wonderful Number one Tracks from the 80's Disadvantages: None
makes up for in content. As many of you will know from my previous reviews one of my pasions is 80's music, and the beauty with this album is that although all the tracks were numberone singles, very few of them appear on other compilation albums. Although the album was particularly cheap, I don't feel cheated by the quality of the tracks on offer.
Track Listing
1. Duran Duran - The Reflex
Not the Brummie boys greatest offering (Rio, Save A Prayer and Girls on Film probably do it for me) but a decent enough track to kick start the album.
2. Midge Ure - If I Was
Midge is probably best known for his role with Bob Geldof in getting Live Aid up and running, but he was also a successful artist with Ultravox before embarking on a solo career which culminated in this huge hit. Unmistakable Glaswegian vocals.
3. Spandau Ballet ...
Advantages: The 6 number 1 records Disadvantages: The rest of the tracks are rubbish
Well the title itself is a misnomer for starters as the disco era was a fairly short period during the mid 1970's as disco was ousted from the music scene by Punk and the 80's were ruled by 2 Tone Ska then the New Romantics and synth music at least as far as the UK went any way.
Disco may have lived on into the 80's in America but it was replaced by electro, hip hop then rap followed by House music. Wikipedia even openly admits that disco died in 1979 but also states "the genre continued to be popular elsewhere during the 1980s", probably in less fashionable countries that hadn't adopted whatever was popular from England or America by then. Take it from someone who lived through all 3 decades, disco was dead and gone by the 1980's.
So whats on this album then?
1. High Energy - Evelyn Thomas. This was #1 in a few places in 1984 but ...
Advantages: Ohhh to be young again Disadvantages: none
Well at last it has appeared as I requested this. In November last year I saw this advertised on the television and wondered if it was as good as it seems. I was a bit worried as I have bought many an 80's flop only to find that all the songs have been by one band and appalling at that and it has gone straight to the bin.
I however kept seeing this television advert and put it on my wish list to Santa. However Santa wrote me a nice letter saying that he could not get into Woolworths to buy it on Christmas Eve as it was jammed packed.
So come the sales, off I trotted and priced it up at HMV, Woolies and other places and it all seemed to around the same price £15. Now I am not really a cd person, I prefer most of the old vinyl days which I collect and probably have got over a 1000 records but my player broke.
I took the CD to ...
