Advantages: The first album by the classic line with two more classic songs Disadvantages: Some filler
...and evil in a Victorian nursery . For this Gabriel had the opportunity to wear his “scary old man” mask. This is the first classic Genesis track on this album. After the interlude of “For Absent Friends” we have the second classic “The Return of The Giant Hogweed”, a “Day of the Triffids” set to music, based on a true story, and featuring Tony Banks with some of the fiercest Mellotron playing that you ... ...when they wanted, unlike some of the “progressive” bands of the time.
Although the rest of the album is reasonably pleasant , only the honky tonk piano driven “Harold the Barrel” and the closing “The Fountain of Salmacis” are worth repeated listening.
With this album Genesis proved they were at home with short pieces and traditionally structured songs as well as their epic compositions. They didn’t flaunt ...
