Advantages: Location, location, location Disadvantages: Noisy for some guests
We went on holiday to Majorca for 10 days in July and stayed at the Sol Trinidad hotel in Magaluf. We have been to Magaluf in the past and stayed at a Sol hotel which we really liked and so decided to give this one a go. We booked it off teletext and stayed half-board.
The hotel has 375 rooms spread over 9 floors, we had a pool view room on the forth floor which was quite handy as the two (very small!) lifts were out of action a few times and I was grateful for only having to climb four flights of stairs.
It is situated a 2 minute walk across the road to the beach, and the road along the front of the hotel has lots of shops (clothes, souvenirs, booze, fags etc) and the road behind mainly bars and BCM the major nightclub where Radio 1 were doing there live weekend while we were there. It is a 5 minute walk to the strip where all ...
mostly low-pitched but well chosen notes.
This album is fun to compare to his other work, as over the years his performances have become more sensitive and refined. The harmonizations are well thought out (Gilberto is notorious for spending weeks picking out the perfect chord), and byt the time this album was recorded his voice already had that grandfather-like quality. Classics such as "Àguas de Março", "Falsa Baiana" and "Izaura" have amazing sound quality, comparable to todays' recordings.
If you can read Portuguese, or are able to find translations for the lyrics, it will heighten the experience if you read the poetry along with the performance. João Gilberto has at least ten albums on the market, and is established as the "Father of Bossa Nova" with collaborations from Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso, GilbertoGil, Chico Buarque and many ...
Advantages: Clean, Good entertainment for the kids, good pool Disadvantages: up the hillside
This was our third trip to Puerto Rico and the first time we had stayed on the hillside.
We stayed during the middle of October 2006
The Castillo deSol Apartments are very clean. We stayed in a one bedroomed apartment. The bedroom was a good size with two good sized wardrobes and a dressing table with a nice large mirror. As always, it was a twin bedded room so we just slid the beds together.
Our daughter slept on the sofa bed in the lounge area (bedding was left for us).
There was a hand towel and a bath towel for each of us which were changed every other day. bedding was changed once during the week we stayed. The maids cleaned 5-6 days per week.
The rooms are basic but more than adequate for our needs (somewhere to get changed and to sleep at night!) We did have a TV in the room which took Euro coins and even the smaller 10 ...

Album Notes
Personnel includes: Gilberto Gil, Marlui Miranda (vocals, acoustic guitar); Trilok Gurtu (vocals, percussion); Celso Fonseca (guitar); Toninho Ferragutti (accordion); Bugge Wesseltoft (piano, keyboards); Rodolfo Stroeter (acoustic & electric basses); Zezinho Pitoco (drums, zabumba); Guelo (percussion). Engineers: Jan Eric Kongshaug, Alberto Ranellucci. Principally recorded at Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway in November 1994. Includes liner notes by Hermano Vianna. O SOL DE OSLO was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Musica Popular Brasileira Album. This 1998 Gilberto Gil recording is rather different from QUANTA and his other '90s releases. With SOL DE OSLO, Gil attempts to represent some of the culturally diverse variations of the music of Brazil's Northeast, known as the sertao (backlands.) He brings with him the lovely accordion playing of Toninho Ferragutti, as well as a tabla player and various other instruments representing a cross-cultural, trans-global sound. As if this were not enough, Gil and his musicians also collect traditional songs from all over Brazil to be performed alongside originals written by Gil and the producer of SOL DE OSLO, Rodolfo Stroeter. Gil's voice is as beautiful and strong as always. The odd assortment of instruments is used quite tastefully, and guest vocalist Marlui Mirandi--who has worked with indigenous tribes of the Amazon--shines in a manner not heard on her own records. SOL DE OSLO shows that even after 30 years, Gilberto Gil was still one of the most inventive figures in Brazilian music.
Album Reviews
Dirty Linen (4-5/99, p.69) - "...a musically diverse and enjoyable recording....The surprises reveal less about the musicians' geographic origins and more about the amazing musical terrain open to exploration by all comers."
