Produced back in 1978, Obsession was recorded after their panicle studio album "Lights Out" and whilst not a big hit like its predecessor, Obsession remains a classic album from the UFO discography. After the success of "Lights Out" UFO once again packed their brand new album with another heavy dose of good old hard rock, keyboards and catchy tunes which influenced the likes of Iron Maiden, Megadeth and Metallica to name but a few. This was to be the last studio album of lead guitarist Michael Schenker until he returned in 1993.

This album delivers what I consider to be the most fundamental attribute to early hard rock; catchy 'sing-a-long' tunes. "Looking out for No. 1" and "Ain't no baby" will have you singing along time and time again, whilst the guitar driven instrumental "Arbory Hill" will relax the soul until once again heading back to classic rock such as "Hot 'n' Ready" and "Cherry".
Although not the big hit UFO would have liked, Obsession has, over time, matured to become one of the classic albums of the hard rock driven 70s (and 80s!). It isn't too heavy, isn't too 'cute' and doesn't leave you wanting more. A must buy album for the collection!
Advantages: Another 40 minutes of one of the very greatest American bands Disadvantages: One or two tracks, whisper it, might be considered 'filler'
, and now the pair of you aren't talking. You feel that you've taken your template of sex, death, mutilation and religion (not that you'll ever admit it's a template, what with being an avowed surrealist and all) just about as far as it can go. And you have an unscratchable itch to make the band that started out as your band into YOUR band again.
Welcome to Charles Michael Kittridge 'Black Francis' Thompson IV's world as he planned 'Bossanova'.
Dialling back the abrasion (although sometimes the listener is hard-pressed to notice) and upping the poppiness, this time around you claim to be taking inspiration from surf music and sci-fi: the former because your lead guitarist loves it and you live in California now, and the latter because you had a UFO experience as a child and have always been obsessed with the subject. The end result is ...
UFO (Techno): Phil Mogg (vocals); Paul Raymond (guitar, keyboards); Michael Schenker (guitar); Pete Way (bass instrument); Andy Parker (drums). Recording information: C.P. McGregors, Los Angeles, CA.
