This album starts with the classic Jam"es Taylor fingerpicking technique and great songwrting of October Road" which has got to be the best song of the album. "September Grass" is not far off though the cover "Mean Old Man" is less of my cup of tea.

doing it again: sending shivers up the back of the neck, breaking the listener's features into a grin. Hard to say what it is--sublime voice, soft wise words, gorgeous guitar picking? Whatever--the package is inimitable, and it's a different class. He's never been one for style make-overs--when you deal in vintage claret, why go New World--butOctober Roadhas the customary subtle progressions of his best work. Reference points are Steve Gadd's clever drumming, which contrives to lift the tunes up while remaining entirely self-effacing, and Russ Titelman's production, which applies a patina that brings out the natural hues of each song. Taylor himself--now in his mid-50s and far removed from the introverted singer-songwriter of his early fame--operates ever more elliptically now, both in terms of his lyrics and his vocal lines: try the distinctly jazzy "Mean Old Man" or "September Grass", the autumnal love song that opens the album and sends those shivers.--Brian Glasser

Advantages: Great CD, new tunes which are just as great as the old ones! Disadvantages: A couple of more boring tracks slipped in there.

I'd say that this album ranks around fifth in my Taylor Collection. Preceed by "Sweet Baby James", "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon", "JT" and "In the Pocket". If it had to draw ... ...would probably tie with "Walking Man".
I you're a new fan, you might prefer "Sweet Baby James", "Mud Slide Slim" or the greatest hits, though I would still recommend this CD alot! It's most suited to a collector and fan who has around 3 or 4 albums.

Where to start......... I am a big fan. James Taylor's music is all great! Though there are obviously going to be better albums than others. The best by far is Sweet Baby James, so if you're looking for where to start, start there. However, this is a contender. Just because he's not in the hight of youth does not stop James from producing a great album which is even better (in my opinion) than the highly acclaimed "Hourglass", the previous album.

Album Notes
Personnel includes: James Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar); Michael Landau (guitar, gut string guitar); John Pizzarelli, Ry Cooder (guitar); Stuart Duncan (violin); Tommy Morgan (harmonica); Michael Brecker (saxophone); Robbie Kilgore, Larry Goldings (piano); Clifford Carter (organ, keyboards, synthesizer); Rob Mounsey (keyboards, synthesizer): Greg Phillinganes (keyboards); Jimmy Johnson (bass); Steve Gadd (drums); Luis Conte (percussion). "Mean Old Man" won the 2003 Grammy Award For Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals. "October Road" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. You've got to hand it to pioneering singer-songwriter James Taylor for staying the course decade after decade. His 2002 release OCTOBER ROAD is so much of a piece with his previous work that it wouldn't have sounded out of place as a follow-up to his 1970 breakthrough album SWEET BABY JAMES. The laid-back phrasing, slightly jazzy acoustic guitar chords, artful-but-humble lyrical themes, it's all there. Though the elements that make up the Taylor sound are never far away, OCTOBER ROAD is not just a rewrite of past glories. "Belfast to Boston," with its pennywhistle and (synthesized) bagpipes, is an ostensibly Celtic-themed song about the tragedies of war and hatred, but the song manages to be subtly relevant to its post-9/11 emergence. The good-humored "Mean Old Man" is a Taylor original that sounds like a jazz standard, partly thanks to the work of famed jazzers Larry Goldings (piano) and John Pizzarelli (guitar). While Taylor occasionally indulges himself in a little polite R&B bounce, though, the bulk of OCTOBER ROAD is cloaked in the gentle, contemplative folk-rock style that those familiar with the man's oevure will have no problem cozying up to.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (10/3/02, p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A hit album without any obvious hit songs....Taylor's unhurried acoustic picking and calm, steady croon are - as they should be - the album's central joys." Q (9/02, p.115) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...An album of rich, subtle melodies, championship-level guitar, playing and lyrical depth, as good an introduction to the low-key wonder of Taylor's work as MUD SLIDE SLIM or IN THE POCKET were in the 70's....A virtual songwriting masterclass." Mojo (9/02, p.106) - "...the world's most accomplished exponent of [soft rock]...faultlessly arranged, impeccably played songs." Entertainment Weekly (8/16/02, p.72) - Grade B - "...Taylor pretty much defines easy listening..." Uncut (9/02, p.118) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...the melodic facility and phrasing are as elegant as we have come to expect...OCTOBER ROAD's autumnal tones prove there is no substitute for experience."
