Advantages: Unique genre in alot of ways Disadvantages: Might put off the faint hearted with untamed lyrics
...I bought this CD about three months ago, on a friends advice. My friend likes extreme music so I was rather reluctant to take his advice, but after alot of nagging on his part I gave in, and it was worth it!
I would recommend this album to someone who likes alternative music forms, the music itself (drums, guitar, bass etc.) isn't too off-the-wall, but the lyrics describe some very odd and, at times, sexual scenes.
This album is not for the faint hearted or easily offended. The lyrics are sung and screamed (that's right it's not ALL screaming), but I found the lyrics very hard to make out when the singer was screaming.
Despite the above, I found the album to be interessting and well thought out and this CD definately broadened my music collection....

Advantages: A more commercial sound, brilliant lyrics Disadvantages: It's not Thick as a Brick
...This was the Tull 'comeback' album that stunned the rock world when it won the 1989 Grammy for best Hard Rock Album ahead of the odds on favourite 'And Justice for All' from Metallica.
Whether this really is a hard rock album is another matter - it's certainly not a typical Tull album (if such exists) but it opens with a very ZZ Top influenced Steel Monkey whilst other tracks - notably Farm on the Freeway and Budapest - bring to mind Dire Straits. In part that's because Ian Anderson had, perforce, to change his vocal style following the throat problems that had beset him earlier in the decade, leading to a slower, more 'spoken' style of song narration. This also helps makes it perhaps the most 'commercial' sounding of Tull's many albums.
Lyrically it is one of Ian's best, and songs like Farm on the Freeway...

Advantages: Bonus tracks, excellent remaster, brilliant 70s prog Disadvantages: Bonuses aren't that special
...talent, Voyage represented both Hackett's future style and the first indication of the tight musical perfection Genesis would achieve in subsequent tours - Rutherford's bass is frequently mind bogglingly good and a surprise for many who simply knew him as an okay guitarist, whilst Collins's drumming was (by that time) becoming something a bit special.
Far from the pastoral oddness of Gabriel-era Genesis, Voyage contains echoes of the band's mid to late seventies output, but is so different in tone and style that it's clearly not a Genesis album. From the frantic and technically fiddly opening salvo of Ace Of Wands (the album's first track), it's clear that Hackett wants to show the listener that this is no mere filler until the next Genesis album. Indeed, much of (the largely instrumental) Voyage is darker and meaner than even The Lamb...
