"From the canyons to the stars" is Olivier Messiaen's musical vision of the sights and ... more
sounds (birdcalls in particular) of the American West. If you've ever been to Zion National Park or Bryce Canyon, then this musical travelogue will certainly stimulate your memory. Messiaen's musical language in all of these works is unique. You won't find conventional melody or harmony, but it is colorful and consistent, and he's just as likely to use lovely, consonant harmonies as nasty dissonant ones. Once you understand that the purpose of his music is almost purely descriptive, your own imagination takes over and it becomes fascinating and enjoyable--which is a good description of these fine performances. --David Hurwitz

An interesting album of jazz tracks that grips you from the very first moment. The band are from New York and have recently made it onto the scene in the last few years. Some tracks are better than others. I would recommend this album as an easy listening record. It's something you can relax to in the evening. Sex Mob are a jazz quartet led by trumpeter Steven Bernstein. They are very talented musicians and I would highly recommend this album.

Advantages: Experimental jazz Disadvantages: Might be too inaccessible for some
an intense song and a sexual melody that longs to be caressed.
"Luvin Blume" is one that I prefer and has a deep bass line that accompanies a fluid sound of acoustic drums and electronic production effects. "Quiet" is a typical lounge composition throbbing with sensual omnipotence. The more organic "Dick Contino's Blues" takes you deeper into the swamp. Here the use of electronic percussion imitates what seem like crickets chirping and frogs croaking. "Kid Rock Deluxe" continues the theme and incorporates extensive hip hop percussion. The overall effect is a more upbeat groove that leaves you swinging from the trees.

Composing a CD such as this requires an underlying intelligence that ...
Advantages: quiet, beautiful, nature, ocean, pinewood forests ... Disadvantages: too busy in summer time
town of Cap-Ferret is worth visiting for its typical "parcs à huîtres" (oysters culture), and a really special nice looking church. It has a modern design with original stained-glass windows.
My advice is, for those who don't need a car to carry the boards, to take a boat from Arcachon to spend the day in Cap-Ferret. The return ticket is not expensive at all, and it prevents you from looking for a parking place and to drive all the way long around the bassin d'Arcachon.
During summer time, there are many boats during the day, but I'm not certain for the rest of the year, so if you plan to try this visit, better check with the tourism office of Arcachon.
What is also possible to do, is to take a boat in the morning to go to "l'île aux oiseaux", to spend the day there and to return in the evening.
