OK Computer, the third offering from Radiohead, is perhaps the zenith of their career so far. This album is truly a work of art and is a landmark in rock history. But every review of this album will tell you this so I’ll skip all the boring details of how Radiohead started off by being laughed at and thought of being nothing special to becoming one of (if not the) greatest bands of all time, and the usual introductions to pieces of writings about this band since I don’t think I can say anything new.
The album starts off really powerfully, with a heavily distorted (but at the same time being smooth) guitar opening. This first song- “Airbag”- sets the tone of the rest of the album (a sort of science fiction theme with lots of futuristic sounds) and generally shows off the amazing talent that this band has- again. However, it isn’t until this song finishes and you are led by the hand into “Paranoid Android” that you see just how great Radiohead can be. “Paranoid Android” is an innovative, moving piece of technical genius. Remember the reaction “Bohemian Rhapsody” got when Queen released it (I don’t, ‘cause I wasn’t born but hey…)? Anyway, this song goes even better than that in terms of changing the whole tune several times, surprising you at every change yet giving you a feeling of a smooth transition. Add to this amazing guitar work, amazing vocals (you may think that is Thom Yorke singing over himself, but it is actually Ed singing with him) and overall brilliance, you have one of the most amazing tunes you will ever have the honour to hear in your life.
The rest of the album is great, and there’s songs in there even people who don’t like Radiohead much will enjoy (yes, there are some of these freaks running around ;o))- whether it is the soft percussion-based melody of “No Surprises”, the calm tear-enducing lyrics of “Exit Music” or the pure rock of “Electioneering”. Every man/woman/dog/cat/plastic cup WILL enjoy this album in some parts. Even my parents like listening to it!!!
The lyrics as in pure Radiohead style are flawless and thought-provoking- no change there then.
Cover art is great… interesting as always :o)
Overall, I say buy this album now and treasure it for the rest of your life. It is a true master-piece and worthy of a place in every single record collection in the land.
