The fourth album by Alexisonfire 'Old Crows / Young Cardinals' has everything you'd expect from this band and a bit more. Powerful guitar riffs, emotionally driven screams and the soothing voice of Dallas Green are all a prominent feature.
Perhaps those who discovered Alexisonfire with their last album 'Crisis' (2006) will be disappointed as Old Crows does not the same appeal to the wider commercial audience. However, the album will please many hardcore fans with an attempt to return to the band's roots and will change minds of those believing Alexisonfire want to write pop-rock songs.
The first track, 'Old Crows', introduces the new album claiming 'We are not the kids we used to be' in true Alexisonfire high tempo, aggressive style. The band display their fantastic ability to mix Dallas' soft vocals with the screams of George Pettit and Wade MacNeil. The album continues at this pace, 'No Rest' is a personal favourite with a riff that will leave you gagging for further listens. While 'The Northern' is a perfect demonstration of how Alexisonfire can send shivers down your spine by slowing down and creating an altogether different atmosphere.
By the time you've heard the 10th track 'Accept Crime' you will feel like you've taken a ride on a rollercoaster; adrenaline fueled and breathless. Consequently, 'Burial' provides a haunting finale as the band slow down and allow you to take stock of the last 42 minutes.
'Old Crows / Young Cardinals' emphasises the strides Alexisonfire have made since their self titled debut album in 2002. The potential shown back then has been realised as Alexisonfire have combined to create a record that displays the power and orginiality that rock music has missed in recent times. The question is how far can Alexsonfire go?

Album Notes
Fourth album from acclaimed young Canadian post-hardcore band, the follow-up to 2006's 'Crisis' and their debut for Roadrunner. Produced by their longtime collaborator Julius Butty (Protest The Hero), it sees the band "put the knife into screamo" by experimenting with a range of fresh ideas, including slower tempos, to create a new, more atmospheric sound. However, fans of the band need not worry that the aggressive heaviness and intelligent lyrics of their older work have been forgotten.
