The Topsy and Tim series of books have been loved by children since they first began to be published in 1960. They are simple stories of a set of twins as they go through many of the experiences that young children experience, such as going to the doctor and the dentist. They can be very useful in helping to prepare children for something new as well as being lovely stories in their own right.
In this Topsy and Tim adventure the twins are taken by their Mummy to buy newshoes because their old ones are all worn out. They have their feet measured and learn about the importance of wearing the right size shoes.
This book really helped my autistic son on a recent visit to have his feet measured. We read it the night before so that he knew what to expect. I reminded him during the visit to the shoe shop that he was doing the same as Topsy ...
Peppa Pig is an endearing little girl pig, with an adorably cute curly tail. She lives in a house on top of a hill with her little brother George, her father and her mother. They are often visiting, or being visited by, Grandma and Grandpa Pig)
Curious though it might the world of Peppa Pig and of her many animal friends is quite close to reality. In fact, it's probably closer to reality than many so-called "reality" TV shows.
Peppa can be a bossy little minx, her little brother is obsessed with dinosaurs ("Dinesaur GRRRRR"! as George is often heard to say, as he waves his plastic dinosaur at people. Her mother is very practical and Peppa's father? Well, he gets as grumpy as most dads. "I do not get grumpy!" appears to be his catchphrase. I seem to remember my dad saying that. Quite a lot!)
