Manchester - home of Merseybeat
Review of Very Best Of Freddie & The Dreamers, The - Freddie & The Dreamers by fairenoughclough

Advantages: Once the biggets band in the world
Disadvantages: Now a **** cabaret band, Freddie and the wet dreams

...the Mersey, which they've tried very hard to hide. Stockport, birthplace of Paul Morley and the biggest brick structure in Europe, the railway viaduct. That's enough about Stockport. The Mersey, Didsbury/Withington border used to have bands on in the cellar in the sixties, forget about the cavern and the Beatles, South Manchester is where it was all kicking-off, more about Freddie's ridiculous dance steps later. Freddie and the Dreamers, South ...
...with simultaneous numbers one, two and three, in the US charts. Yet you couldn't quite take them seriously, why did Freddie have to do that stupid dance ? The band Freddie Garrity : vocals and other foolishness, now to dance no more Pete Birrell : Bass guitar and taxis Derek Quinn : lead guitar Roy Crewsdon :Rhythm guitar and bar Bernie Dwyer : drums and sadly no longer with us All the hits are here and lots more besides 1. Monkeeing around?
Review of Monkees, The (Deluxe Edition) - Monkees (The) by snowbird123

Advantages: Some classic songs in stero; some bonus tracks
Disadvantages: Missing most of their classic tracks; too many fillers

This is a whole lot of Monkees for the money. Whether it is value for money or not is a personal opinion. However everybody's favourite sixties made-for-TV pop group never fail to get your feet tapping and a smile on your face. This is breezy, easy listening. Good to hear several classic tunes in stereo. No surprises that the DVD opens with the familiar happy-go-lucky Monkees theme tune. This is followed on by several personal favourites including ...
...an alternative version of the theme tune and mono versions of some of the songs in stereo such as "Last Train to Clarkesville". Fillers? Depends on how much of a Monkees completist you want to be. Certainly not sure that you need the third version of it that's on it for sure. There are a few previously unreleased tracks such as "Propinquity". Having heard it there may be a good reason why it was unreleased. I adore the Monkees but to be honest I ... Read review

It's Kool
Review of The Collection - Kool & The Gang by piggypine

Advantages: Great Live recording and excellent tracks
Disadvantages: Final song fades out too soon

...in my CD player at the same time as boy band music and cheesy 80's pop. I'm particularly fond of Soul, Motown & Funk with a healthy dollop of Disco thrown in. My latest addition to my CD collection, in the disco/funk feel at least, is The Kool & The Gang Collection and it was an absolute bargain at £2 from my local Somerfield store, it can also be found on Amazon for £5.99 new or from 59p Used. The Kool & The Gang Collection is a 13 track CD featuring ...
...collection bought to life by the fact that it is recorded live, you get a real concert sound with none of the over produced instrument sound and no tweaked vocals that you would find on studio produced work, you are also treated to the banter of the band and crowd interaction, giving the feel that you could actually be there at the concert. The songs for the most part flow from one to the next with no discernable gaps in between tracks, it's only ... Read review

Top Tunes From Top of the Pops
Review of Top Of The Pops The 80's - Various Artists by supercityfan

Advantages: Lots of great songs from the eighties
Disadvantages: A few not so great

...declaring that it is a Top of The Pops Album, with this letting enclosed to make it appear like a circle. The BBC logo is also detailed but this is hardly prominent either. In red lettering at the bottom of the circle the album stipulates the 80s, and provides details of a selection of artists in white lettering across the bottom of the album cover. As I say it is hardly capturing the imagination. So if the album cover didn't grab your attention ...
...this was kept off the top of the charts by Joe Dolce's Shaddupa your face I will never know. For all those of you who bought it (you know who you are) you should be shot. This is an absolute classic (Ultravox not Joe Dolce !!) which has not aged. And What about the Second Disc Track 1 - The Sun Always Shines on TV - A-Ha I don't know what it was about Morten and the rest of the good looking Norwegian boys that girls found so attractive !!. ... Bovver
Review of Very Best Of Joe Brown, The (50th Anniversary) - Joe Brown by grafter123

Advantages: Classic tracks, diverse, some great versions.
Disadvantages: Not everyone's cup of tea

...he saw a CD, The Very Best of Joe Brown, 50th Anniversary and promptly bought it. This CD shows me, anyway, that many of the tracks were from a slightly earlier period than I had thought. After all 50 years ago it would have been 1958. Joe Brown was a spiky haired youth before spiky hair was ever thought about. He was always seen as an affable cheeky cockney, who looks and seems no different all these years later. Born in 1941 he began his musical ...
...a good job and an very individual version. Black Betty is another traditional track with a great banjo accompaniment. A Picture of you was a hit for Joe Brown and the Bruvvers years ago. It is a happy sounding track with banjo and guitars. 'In the night there are sights to be seen, stars like jewels on the crown of a queen, but the only sight I want of you, is that wonderful picture of you' There are a couple of tracks which appear more than once. ...
