The Original Belle de Jour

Advantages: A classic of French cinema
Disadvantages: Challenging at times

"Belle de Jour" was Buñuel's first film in colour and claimed the Golden Lion at the 1967 Venice Film Festival. It also won the award for Best Foreign Film in 1968 from the New York Film Critics Circle. It was based loosely on a novel by Joseph Kessel and like all of Buñuel's films it's subject matter borders on the surreal and draws upon prevalent ideas of Freudian theory and the idea that our everyday reality is constantly being undermined by subconscious hidden urges. What concerned Buñuel in many of his films was the way in which our underlying emotional forces and acts of sublimation override conscious acts of free will. This was the movie that inspired the website and the book of the same name that in turn inspired the TV series 'Secret Diary Of A Call Girl '. The film portrays the double existence of Severine (Catherine Deneuve ...

Review of Belle De Jour (40th Anniversary Edition) (DVD)

Is the game over for Belle?

Advantages: Entertaining, easy to read
Disadvantages: Not as entertaining or shocking as the first book

I read the first book by Belle de Jour a couple of years ago, after watching a few episodes of the ITV2 series 'The Secret Diary of a Call Girl' which starred Billie Piper. At that time, there was some controversy about the TV series and the book on which is based, with accusations that they were glamourising prostitution and potentially encouraging vulnerable young women into the sex industry. When I spotted 'Playing the Game' in the library, I automatically assumed that this was the sequel to 'The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl' but this is actually the third book in the series. Despite the controversy and publicity surrounding the original book and the subsequent TV series, I wasn't actually aware that a follow up book, much less two books, had also been published. Despite not having read the second book, I started ...

Wii Fit Plus a big improvement

Advantages: Good value for money, increased workout choices
Disadvantages: Limited target settings

After using the original Wii Fit game for about a year, I found the Wii Fit Plus to be a big improvement, and good value at only £20. It automatically transfers all your saved data from the Wii Fit so you don't have to start over. I found the major improvement to be the facility to program a workout, rather than just being able to do individual exercises as before - it means a much better workout overall as you don't have to keep stopping and selecting exercises. You can either select a preset workout from the menu or customise your own using your favourite bits. There are a number of new excercises present as well which I found great as I did start getting a bit bored with the limited selection on the original Wii Fit. The calories/target section is a bit of a let down, you can set a target for calories to burn each day but these are ...
