Advantages: Has some of their best known hits, has some special extras not found on other albums. Disadvantages: There are sometimes too many versions of the same song, which I got bored with easily.
'TheBBCSessions' is a compilation album by The Beautiful South. Released in 2007, it is a good mixture of all their greatest hits; 'Sail this ship alone', Song for whoever', Old red eyes is back', 'perfect 10', 'dumb' and my personal favourite 'a little time'.
This is actually a really good 2 disc special to have in your collection if you are a fan of the band as there are some really nice treats like the bands own version of 'use it up wear it out'!
The unusual thing about this album is that it has 4 different versions of 'You keep it all in' and 2 versions of 'Old red eyes is back'. This is really good if you are a fan of those particular songs and enjoy hearing slightly different versions of each, but I must admit that the charm of this wore off pretty quickly for me and I ended up skipping these tracks after a while ...
Advantages: Re-Recordings Of His Hits, Along With Unique Covers And Songs Disadvantages: Sound Quality Occasionally Drops, Although Not To Any Great Extent
The Jimi Hendrix BBCsessions is a release that builds on the work of the much earlier, Radio One, release encompassing more recordings with improved sound quality. It brings together all of the songs that the group recorded for the BBC, as well as a few alternate takes, which were made to provide the content that got around the limitations on the playing of records during broadcasts, which was limited to seven hours split between both Radio 1and 2. At the time, the playing of records on the radio was seen almost as a discouragement for listeners to go out and purchase them for themselves, as if you could hear them on the radio for free, why go out and pay for them. Luckily though, this meant that the BBC was able to build up a huge archive of spectacular material from some of the biggest groups of the era, with such luminaries as ...
Advantages: it's the Delgados Disadvantages: May not be easy to find. its the Delgados so will never be a million seller
Coll's ?Ballad of Accounting?. I love this version a, as the band sounds so Scottish and folky but never twee .The final verse which is sung accapella with just hand claps in the background is especially effective. It's got a great pace to it that makes me want to leap about and do jigs and skip changes to it.
The ?Complete Peel Sessions? is not meant to be a best of. There's nothing from ?Hate? including the wonderfully titled ?All You Need is Hate? and other key songs such as the epic ?American Trilogty? is missing. However I would recommend it as a good overview of the Delgados perhaps for those that have come to them via Emma Pollock's solo career. It's a tribute to perhaps my favoruite band ever and also the much missed and loved John Peel.
I bought my copy for £10 in Fopp. ...
