Pink Floyds swansong The Division Bell. That period of near-silence has now given way to a flurry of solo touring and glorious charitable reunions, which are enough to make you forget its been over a decade since we last heard anything new from the band or its remaining members. All this has changed now with the arrival of On An Island. Immaculately crafted with sundry high-profile guests, the album rolls along gently, only cutting loose on "Take A Breath" (reminiscent of "Yet Another Movie"). Lyrically, dont expect any Floydian angst here; Polly Samsons words are dominated by familial contentment and emotional warmth. This may understandably jar with the expected lyrical subjects, but it adds another facet to Gilmours persona. Musically, all of the trademark soaring mercurial guitars and crashing epics are in place, and there are moments of pure Floyd on the title track and "The Blue" both of which feature Richard Wright. These two tracks are the standouts, alongside the gentle "Smile", and rank among Gilmours best work, and help make this album as essential as anything from his former bands catalogue. --Thom Allott

DAVID GLIMOUR
A short history ......................
David rightly advertised this concert as 'DavidGilmour - The voice and Guitar of Pink Floyd'. Rightly so in my limited opinion........................David began his carer with a group called Jokers wild, then Bullittt and Flowers before joining Pink Floyd in 1968 at the tender age of 21. David helped Pink Floyds success in the 1970's, especially on 'Dark side of the moon' which is apparently the 3rd most successful album of all time.
In 1985 (after Roger Walters acrimonious departure) he became a main stay of Pink Floyds albums ' a momentary lapse' and ' the division bell' . In 2003 David was honoured with the CBE for services to music. In 2005 the band Pink Floyd with Roger Walters were reunited at Live 8 where I can assure you they stole the show.
'On an island' is his ...
Advantages: A collection dreams, fantasies and mood shifting pieces Disadvantages: An acquired taste
After a sell out tour, the long awaited solo album from DavidGilmour, landed on our shelves this year proving to his long standing fan base that this middle aged 'grumpy old man' can still make the grade by giving us music to dream, reflect and inspire by. The self composed 'On An Island' is a imaginative collection of instrumental and vocal pieces by the man who became the guitar and the voice behind Pink Floyd.
Appearing, primarily back in the mid to late Sixties as one of a long list of self imposed 'Super groups,' this stadium filling band compiling of ordinary looking, exceptional musicians, expanded into the progressive field of sectioning rock with European and electric themes thus creating pieces of extraordinary length and versatility.
Although there is nothing psychedelic of Syd Barrett influence about this album ...
Advantages: Acoustic tracks galore, new take on Floyd classics, beautiful show... Disadvantages: Not enough extras, home movie could have been longer, no Kate Bush...
First up, I have to confess. I'm a massive Floyd fan and David is God to me. I would even say that I'm helplessly Devoted. So I'm tempted not to say much about the concert itself, because the very fact that it's called 'DavidGilmour in Concert' is a dead give-away. I mean, it's DavidGilmour, he's in concert, so, therefore, it's obviously a brilliant show! But I will pass comment in due course, so please bear with me.
The interactive DVD menus are very nice indeed. Call me fussy, but I do hate grappling with a crappy menu. The first menu screen features nice use of the 'Shine On' riff, each of the four notes prompting an option: Meltdown Concert - Stereo, Meltdown Concert - 5.1 Dolby, Track Selection and Features.
No need to explain the first two, so let's get straight on to Track Selection.
