This is one of his four sensational albums, and some would argue it's his best. I still have to say that some of the tracks on 'Brushfire Fairytales' top the list for me, but this is undoubtedly one of Johnson's best efforts to date.

champion turned alternative pop-folk star really hasn't changed things one iota for his second release. Fans ofBrushfire Fairytalesshould be delighted with the results. The groove is a mellow one--most of the 16 tracks here are semi-acoustic--and that easy-going spirit filters into Johnson's lyrical philosophies. "What will be will be / And so it goes" he sings on "Times Like These", the opening track. Thankfully, Johnson is never too mellow, and there's a "Don't worry, be happy" vibe to most of his music--"The Horizon Has Been Defeated" even has a pseudo-reggae feel to it. Although classified as an alternative musician, the singer-songwriter's compositions owe much to past hits. "Traffic in the Sky" is reminiscent of Jim Croce's "Operator" and Looking Glass's one-hit-wonder, "Brandy". On the splendid "Taylor", Johnson sounds an awful lot like Donovan, and "By the Way" recalls the Lovin' Spoonful.--Bill Holdship

'On and On' is a thoughtfully composed collection of Johnson's guitar and vocals combination, both provided by him. And once again the lyrics are his own, and are intelligently designed to be inkeeping with his wide-ranging strengths as a recording artist.

Well, as my other reviews of Jack Johnson's recordings suggest, I'm something of a Jack Johnson fan and my review is therefore weighted with unregrettable bias. Jack Johnson is, in my opinion, one of the greatest and most under-rated artists in the world at this moment in time. Want proof of this? Then listen to 'On and On.'

'On and On' is a thoughtfully composed collection of Johnson's guitar and vocals combination, both provided by him. And once again the lyrics are his own, and are intelligently designed to be inkeeping with his wide-ranging strengths as a recording artist.
Former full-time Hawaiian surfer Johnson effortlessly recreates the perception of a chilled out atmosphere on Hawaii's famous beaches, even in the busy offices of Great Britain! This, it would seem, is one of his most unique abilities.
I'm often asked by friends and family what other artists he is similar to. I sometimes struggle to answer this immediately, as he really does possess a refreshing uniqueness. But I'd say the most similar artist I can think of is Damien Rice. He, too, creates a very relaxed atmosphere with his music, and his thought-provoking lyrics are similar to that of Johnson.
So 'On and On' as with most albums, has some tracks which are worth mentioning as particularly excellent tracks. One of my favourite tracks is the spectacularly short 'Cupid'. At 1 minute and 5 seconds it's by far the shortest on the album, but it has a very endearing quality. Although very short, the lyrics and melody are of a high enough quality, and from early enough in the song, to provide great enjoyment!
'Taylor' is another personal favourite of mine, with quite an upbeat melody in relation to other tracks, whilst maintaining its calming quality. 'Cocoon' is a beautiful track, and is currently my absolute favourite, but to be honest there really is very little to choose between the tracks. 'Symbol In My Driveway' is an excellent way to end the album - for some reason it feels like the last song on the CD before you even know that it is - probably a coincidence, but part of me likes to feel that it was intentional, as I know that most of this album's brilliance was intended.
If you want the ultimate chillout CD - look no further. But it's more than that. These horrendous compliations you see during ad breaks on TV claiming to be the world's greatest chillout albums are just nothing when compared with this album. Chillout CD's usually equate to bland melodies and few lyrics, most of which are very ordinary and obvious. This album uses creative melodies and lyrics and stands head and shoulders above the competition.
I recently bought a new phone with Walkman capabilities. I was loading some music onto it and started to drag and drop some of the tracks from 'On and On'. By the end of the five minutes it took I realised that I'd actually selected all of the tracks (just in a different order)! That really is the measure of this album!
Please buy this CD - I very much doubt you'll be disappointed! It cost me about £7.99 and I guarantee that it was worth all that and much more.

Advantages: Lovely, Mellow Thoughtful Music! Disadvantages: Doesn't really make you want to shake your booty.
...reggae like sound to it on a several of the tracks. Obviously music is a very personal thing but if you are into chilled out, acoustic stuff (maybe David Kitt or Damien Rice) then I can't recommend this album enough. If you want something that is going to get you going before you go out on a Saturday night then this isn't for you.
Overall a fantastic, mellow album. ...

Advantages: A great chill out album, perfect for summer evenings Disadvantages: Very similar songs, not much variation
Everybody has those days in their life when they don't want to do much of anything. Maybe you've had a bad week, or things just haven't gone the way that you'd like them to. Whatever the case may be, it just seems like a good day to do nothing. And relish in it. Until recently, I called these days Mondays. But now I have a different name for them: "Johnson Days." (Now let's not take this to a weird place, it's far too early in the review for that.)
I had never heard of JackJohnson prior to In Between Dreams. A few months ago, my aunt purchased this CD that she was incredibly excited about. So she popped it in his CD player while we were driving and I was treated to my first meeting with Jack. Cool, mellow, simple Jack.
Since that first listen, I guess you could say that I've been somewhat immersed in a world of soothing melodies ...
Advantages: Has his great hit upside down. Disadvantages: very childlike rythms and lyrics, not his usual acoustic relaxing music.
At first I wasn't really a big jackjohnson fan, all of my mates were listening to him day in day out. After hearing it alot I started to enjoy it more and more. Now I am quite a big fan of his. However, when I bought this CD in the shop I thought bargain, quite cheap with his new hit song ''upside down''. When I got home and played it, that was the only song I could bring my ears to listening too. I was very disappointed with the songs and lyrics. It's the kind of music you would play at a nursery or at home because it makes you 3-5 year old sing along. Its not quite the same as all of his other albums, have a listen to some of his songs on you tube eg. 3 R's, lullaby, we're going to be friends, jungle gym and with my own tw hands before you buy this CD. ...
Advantages: Feel Good Tracks and a good chill out y Disadvantages: Heavy metal fans stay away
Again JackJohnson continues to amaze with his latest work on this terrific album, however at first I found it hard to get used to the changes on this album from his previous work less of the 'upside down' style of performing acoustic and more of a chill out, with songs that really do grow on you for instance the first number on the album 'All at Once' really [aints a picture of the state the world is in and how it can effect us. With other song such as 'Sleep through the Static' making you wonder about the way we all work. My personal favorite on the album was 'Same Girl' a short but romantic feel good song. With out a doubt everyone will love the exellent rif on the track If 'I Had Eyes' and its exellent lyrics.
JackJohnson fans will love and all acoustic fans. And why not give this album a try if you are yet discover the genious ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Jack Jackson (vocals, guitar); Merlo Podlewski (bass); Adam Topol (drums, percussion). Recorded at Mango Tree, Hawaii. Something of a slacker renaissance man, prototypical mellow surfer-dude Jack Johnson is not only a BILLBOARD-charting recording artist, but also a world-champion athlete and award-winning documentary filmmaker. On his second full-length album, ON AND ON, the sandy-toed singer/songwriter delivers a bare bones set of acoustic folk rock as soft and soothing as the Hawaiian breezes that serve as his inspiration. As on his debut disc, BRUSHFIRE FAIRYTALES, Johnson serves up a groovy, yet slightly melancholy stew in his trademark breathy voice, which at its best recalls everyone from Steve Miller to Chet Baker to Evan Dando of The Lemonheads. This time around, however, the vocalist/guitarist isn't afraid to gently stir pinches of reggae, hip-hop, and Harry Belafonte style pop-calypso into his usual hippie jam-band roux. Mario Caldato Jr.'s ultra-sparse, live-sounding production carefully reveals the subtle sadness that lurks behind even Johnson's poppiest tunes, making ON AND ON the perfect album for a midnight beach party on the last night of summer vacation.
Album Reviews
CMJ (5/12/03, p.9) - "...ON AND ON is full of stripped-down, intimate numbers, with Johnson and his trusty acoustic guitar making the songs' soft-spoken points in laid-back and bluesy setting....Introspective, low-key rock..."
