Every Foo Fighters album, up to and including their fourth studio disc, One By One, ... more
fluently merges rock menace with unabashedly cheery melody and thoughtful if somewhat cryptic lyrics. So while insistent, guitar-terrorised tracks like "All My Life" and "Times Like These (One-Way Motorway)" don't expand the Foos' oeuvre, they're as catchy as hell and well worth the proverbial price of admission. Those searching for veiled Nirvana / Courtney Love references will no doubt unearth them (or unearth what seem like veiled references), while longtime fans can relax in the knowledge that a seasoned pro like Grohl knows better than to meddle with a truly winning formula. True, there's a certain sameness to the spiky, percussive bursts of punk-pop tabled by the Foo Fighters. Yet it's pretty hard to fault players as palpably enthusiastic as Dave Grohl and his gang. --Kim Hughes

...Introduction...
Since Dave Grohl was the drummer in early nineties Grunge band Nirvana with Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic he has been the lead singer and guitarist of the band FooFighters. Their first album "FooFighters" was released in 1995 and was their most similar to the music he performed in Nirvana. Over the following albums the band developed their sound and with 2002's release of OnebyOne they had finally carved their best sound. Here is my review of that album OneByOne.

1.) All My Life
This is one of the best singles they have released and is one of the most recognisable songs in the genre. A biting guitar intro with Grohls voice and then the drums from come pounding in from Taylor Hawkins. This is one of the biggest tracks they have done. A fantastic intro to the album.
2.) Low ...
Advantages: Amazing lyrically, good collection Disadvantages: Couple of tracks missing the rawness
. This is a band who can hold their own against anyone who is out there at the moment.
'But I will come back....I will come back....I will come back'
Grohl is a very convincing frontman, and it makes you wonder how Nirvana would have been had the limelight not been so firmly set on Cobain. Grohl has mastered his art. He is a world renowned drummer, whose presence is requested by many artists, but he has also improved his guitar playing no end since the first FooFighter's album. I think he feels more confident in approaching songwriting that he has allowed some rawness back into his music, and I for one welcome the punk influence that is so apparent on this album. The current line up of Grohl, drummer Taylor Hawkins, bassist Nate Mendel and guitarist Chris Shiflett seems the most balanced out of the various line ups they have had over ...

Album Notes
Initial pressings of ONE BY ONE included a bonus DVD. Foo Fighters: Dave Grohl (vocals, guitar); Chris Shifflet (guitar); Nate Mendel (bass); Taylor Hawkins (drums). Recorded in Virginia. "All My Life" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. "All My Life" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. In between manning drums for the Queens Of The Stone Age album SONGS FOR THE DEAF and the 2003 all-star death metal side-project Probot, Dave Grohl turned out ONE BY ONE, the Foo Fighters' fourth studio outing. With the Foo's line-up remaining intact for the second consecutive album, Grohl's posse set about sanding down the lighter, pop-inflected nuances of the album's predecessor THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE. From the opening cut/lead single "All My Life," the Foo Fighters serve notice that amps are cranked and guitars are far beyond being set on stun. This intense outpouring of energy manifests itself well on the simmering tension of "Low," buzzing melodicism of "Times Like These (One-Way Motorway)," and the drill-press relentlessness of "Have It All." Taking a page from the book of his former group Nirvana, Grohl has fun playing around with dynamics particularly on the bipolar subtle/screaming "Disenchanted Lullaby" and "Lonely As You," a chugging number that seamlessly goes from a lightly strummed intro to churning riffs. The biggest highlights include "Tired," a strummed ballad featuring multi-layered choruses by Queen guitarist Brian May, and closer "Come Back," a prog-flavored seven-minute-plus epic that meanders between soaring passages and segments soaked in angst-laced brio.
Album Reviews
Spin (1/03, p.71) - Ranked #21 on Spin's list of 2002's "Albums of the Year" - "...This firecracker string of a record...wrestles with the risks and rewards of grown-up love." Rolling Stone (11/14/02, p.83-4) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Potent guitar riffs define every song on ONE BY ONE....It's rock that draws power from its determination to struggle onward..." Q (11/02, p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...They've grown in craft and attitude..." Mojo (11/02, p.90) - "...An album that trumpets its own qualities to the world beyond the faithful...it has many moments of greatness..." Entertainment Weekly (10/25/02, p.75) - "...Unexpected exhilaration. Crunch, power and a certain gruff wit you'd expect from the Foos, but elegance as well as devotion to romance?..." - Rating: A- Uncut (12/02, p.129) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...It's a sobering though that the Foos have now made more album than Nirvana. Fittingly, ONE BY ONE is their best yet..." CMJ (10/28/02, p.6) - "...An album that not only easily tops their own previous releases, but can also sit alongside the former Nirvana skinsman's other work as a true rock classic....A near-perfect album..."s
