After first hearing Aaliyah and buying her previous album 'Age Ain't Nothing But A Number' I rushed out to by 'One in a Million' as soon as I heard it was released and wasn't disappointed. It’s a sultry album but shows at the same time pain, revelation and makes you feel each song and it’s meaning.

Album Details
The album as 17 tracks including intro’s and outro’s (See track listing). It was made in 1996 under the record company Blackground Records – www.blackground.com (Part of the Virgin Group). The album has various producers (Please see track listing for producers).

I personally feel the album suit all moods. It’s not too up beat but still can get you in the mood to go out and have a good time. It has it’s sad moment, it’s sexy moments and it’s quite chilled at times too. Like I said, it really is an album for all moods. I can pop this on while reading a book and not find it too distracting, in the same breath I can put it on and really listen to the words of the songs, feel their meaning and emotion.

Full Track Listing and Opinions on songs…
1. Beats 4 Da Streets (Intro) - 2:10
This is stated as an Intro for the album. It’s a bit odd and to be honest I have a habit of skipping it. I’m not a huge fan of intro’s unless they are really relevant to the corresponding track.

2. Hot Like Fire – 4:23
Produced by Timberland for Timberland Production Inc.
This slow and mellow track featuring Missy Elliott. There’s not heavy wrapping. The song is rather sexy, then again with a title like this what would you expect? It’s the sort of track I would dance too to cool down or chill out at a club. It’s not heavy and one of the best tracks on the album.

3. One In A Million – 4:30
Produced by Timberland for Timberland Production Inc.
This is the title track of the album. It’s extremely chilled out. The song like the lady who sings it is ‘One in a Million’. The chorus is, ‘Your love is a one in a million’. It’s not a ballad or love song, more of a tribute to a love with heavy R’n’B over tones and sex appeal. A slow beat, jungle cricket noises in the background and Aaliyah’s soulful voice makes this a fantastic title track!

4. A Girl Like You – 4:22
Produced by Kay-Gee and Darren Lightly for Illtown Records.
An upbeat track and almost a duet. Rapping courtesy of Tretch from Naughty By Nature with Aaliyah. This is actually another favourite of mine and one I sing along too (Loudly); maybe it’s in hope that Tretch is looking for a Girl Like ME? I‘m not sure, I love the track, I love the light heartedness of it, it’s slightly faster than the first 2 (Solid tracks not including the intro), and the beats nice and strong. More hip-hop than R’n’B but not hard and harsh like usual Naughty By Nature, this is rather similar to something maybe Mary J Blige would do, or LL Cool J? An all round good track.

5. If Your Girl Only Knew – 4:50
Produced by Timberland for Timberland Production Inc.
It’s the ‘Nasty’ song, and I don’t mean in the sense it’s not nice. It’s about a guy playing up to a girl who already with someone. It’s quite good, very true to a lot of men I’ve been out with to be honest or have as friends. This is my favourite track of the whole album. I like it’s honesty, the fact that girls (To a point) can be as bad as guys and that we are just as good at playing them at their game. It’s funky, upbeat yet chilled too.

6. Choosey Lover – 7:07
Produced by Vincent ‘V.H.’ Herbert & Craig King for 3 Boyz From Newark Entertainment.
This song is a little odd as it’s split half way through, it’s actually called ‘Choosey Love (Old Skool/New Skool) and that’s exactly what it is. Half the song is done in a ballad style, not like a love song just slow and romantic (If that’s the word) and then half way through you get a children beat kick in, the tempo changes and it becomes full on sexy R’n’B. I’ve never really known whether I am a huge fan of this song, sometimes I love it, other times I grab the remote and switch to the next track. Definitely have to be in the mood for this one.

7. Got To Give It Up – 4:41
Produced by Vincent ‘V.H.’ Herbert & Craig King for 3 Boyz From Newark Entertainment.
This is actually a cover of a Marvin Gaye track by the same title. She does it justice but brings to it a 90’s flavour, bringing it right into the future. I like the fact they have got rapping in the track courtesy of Slick Rick. I think this was linked to a film too, but I can’t remember what film it was. I love this track, it’s upbeat, it’s a party track and is about being out, dancing and having a good time.

8. 4 Page Letter – 4:52
Produced by Timberland for Timberland Production Inc.
This is very slow and chilled about love. I like it but I wouldn’t class it as a love song. There’s only one track that really springs to mind on this album that fits under that category. This to me is more chilled and relaxed, it’s a nice song, relaxed and not heavy on lyrics or beats.

9. Everything's Gonna Be Alright – 4:49
Produced by Rodney Jenkins for RJ Productions Inc.
An up beat track but I’ll be honest and say I don’t like it. It doesn’t really seem to have anything going for it. It’s a bit odd, the lyrics don’t suit the beat and the melody of Aaliyah’s voice (to me) doesn’t suit the song. Sorry can’t say anything good about this one.

10. Giving You More – 4:25
Produced by J Dibbs
A chilled track and I like it. It’s a bit of a lovie one but it’s not a ballad. More just a chilled track that’s good for background music or singing too while in the bath. Chilled beats, soft vocals and relaxed melody, it’s a good one!

11. Gotcha' Back – 2:53
Produced by Jermaine Dupree & Carl-So-Lowe for So-so Def Productions Inc.
This is very Jermain Dupress style. It’s what you would expect from him to be honest. I don’t thin the song suits Aaliyah’s vocals really; I don’t like the melody but the beats ok. I don’t mind the track but there are definitely better ones on this album, just as there’s worse. Not a favourite but I don’t usually skip it.

12. Never Givin' Up – 4:11
Produced by Vincent ‘V.H.’ Herbert & Craig King for 3 Boyz From Newark Entertainment.
I’d class this as a ballad, except its not that slow. It’s a duet of sorts although I’m not 100% who she duets with, I’ve not heard of him before (Tavarius Polk). I do recognise his voice but can’t place it. It’s a feel good ballad, you can hear the love for each other in the lyrics, it’s soft and would work well as a slow sing. I like the difference in their voices and how they work so well together, shame that they haven’t done any more duets together (That I know of). Great track and worth a listen!

13. Heartbroken - 4:19
Produced by Timberland for Timberland Production Inc.
Slow, chilled and relaxing. I like this track. It’s about a girl who loves a guy but he’s played around too much and upset her, so it’s over. It’s a lovely track, it probably sounds harsher than what it is but I like it. It’s very relaxing and the beat makes me feel tired to be honest, that sounds odd I know. A great song though.

14. Never Comin' Back – 4:06
Produced by Timberland for Timberland Production Inc.
This songs a song for the girls if you like. Aaliyah sings of how us ladies love our men, but some men have a habit of being idiots and mess around. It’s got a very basic melody with a good strong beat but isn’t fast. I like this song as it’s great if a guys messed around an you’ve broken up with them, an almost feel good song.

15. Ladies In Da House – 4:20
Produced by Timberland for Timberland Production Inc.
My mums always said if you couldn’t say anything nice then say nothing at all. I hate this track, it seems pointless, doesn’t go anywhere and bores me so I skip it – sorry.

16. The One I Gave My Heart – 4:30
Produced by Daryl Simmons for Silent Partner Productions.
This song is the one true ballad of the album. It’s heart wrenching, depressing and is a break up song if I ever heard one! I love it though. I know it word for word; you feel the pain of the words and the emotion in her voice. If you have never heard it, buy this album for this song!

17. Came To Give Love (Outro)
I still don’t see the point with these intros and outros, they seem a bit pointless hence my poor comment here, I don’t like them – get rid of them record companies when they are pointless!

Prices and Availability –
This album varies in price from shop to shop due to sales although can be purchased for £5.99 on Amazon (www.amazon.co.uk) which is where I found it was cheaper. A bargain really such a small price! As I just mentioned Amazon stocks the album as to most record shops (HMV (www.hmv.co.uk), Andy's Records, Virgin (www.virgin.com)) and I've also found it in WHSmith’s (www.whsmiths.co.uk). So you should have no problems buying it. If these places didn’t have stock, they should be able to get it in for you, although this is one I would look out for in sales, I hate buying older albums and having top pay more for them then the up to date ones!

My Final Conclusion
I highly recommend it and if you haven’t got it and are a fan of the now late and much missed singer Aaliyah, then go and buy it!!! It has everything and there are not many people I know that don’t like it. R’n’B music is an acquired taste as are most styles of music, but if you like something that makes you want to dance, chill, get naughty (Ok we all like having a bit of back ground music in those intimate moments) or just have as back ground, then this is the one for you. It’s a real shame that a lady with such a great talent as this died so young. I give this album 10 out of 10!

Too true... it was tragic that such a beautiful and talented woman could die so young. Haven't heard this album yet, but if I see it around I'll be sure to buy it. Cheers, Drew -x-

A brilliant re-write, it deserves VH. Much more detail has been added and i believe that it will help people much more. Im not a fan of her music but it is a brilliant accompanying op. Jimmy:)
