While you couldn't really class this as a proper follow-up to The Forgotten Arm, Aimee fans certainly won't be disappointed. While you couldn't really class this as a proper follow-up to The Forgotten Arm, Aimee fans certainly won't be disappointed. Since buying this in March, I've been listening to it quite regularly, even though Christmas won't be round for quite some time still. It's testament to the arrangements here that you listen to Christmas songs that don't sound like Christmas songs. The effect is nothing more than spine-tingling, especially on "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and "White Christmas": Aimee Mann chillout, with an absolute earful of originality in her interpretation and orchestration.
With just one original song from Aimee here, "Calling On Mary", you'd think that it's hardly worth laying down good money for what is, essentially, a cover album, but you'd be wrong. It's the most upbeat track of them all, but still very chilled out by Aimee's standards, and highly reminiscent of "Lost in Space". It sits proudly at the end of the album, and does a good job of rounding the collection off. I always love it when it comes round to the end, so I can hear it.
Overall, well-worth your pennies, even in the height of summer.
