I have always liked Elton John’s music but have never gone overboard about it. To me it was always pleasant enough background stuff but not something I would want to buy. Of course, I knew all of the Elton John classics. I guess I just took Elton and his music for granted.
That changed last year, when my wife persuaded me to visit an Elton John concert. As a live performer this man exudes quality, and I just had to get myself an Elton John album.
For me there was only one choice ‘ Elton John – One Night Only’. One of the reasons I like it is that it contains most of the Elton John ‘classics’. The CD cost me £9.99 (from Asda) and, with 15 tracks on it, represents good value for money.
It has the bonus or disadvantage (whichever way you look at it) of a number of famous guests singing duets with him, on some tracks. See track list below for further information.
I’m afraid I am a sucker for the slower songs and particularly enjoy the renditions of ‘Sacrifice’ and ‘Can you feel the love tonight’.
‘Your song’ in company with Ronan Keating is excellent. It is also wonderful to hear Kiki Dee in harness with Elton again singing ‘Don’t go breaking my heart’
This is a ‘live’ recording, which may put some people off. Whilst it may be true that the quality will never be as good as a studio recording I usually prefer a good live album. I believe music is intended to be performed live and the quality of this recording is good enough to almost make you believe you are in the audience.
The recording was made at Madison Square garden in October 2000.
The 15 tracks are:
1. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 2. Philedelphia Freedom 3. Don’t go breaking my heart (duet with Kiki Dee) 4. Rocket man 5. Crocodile rock (this one gets our two toddlers dancing around the floor) 6. Sacrifice (my favourite) 7. Can you feel the love tonight (or is this my favourite) 8. Bennie and the Jets 9. Your Song (duet with Ronan Keating) 10. Sad song (say so much) – duet with Bryan Adams 11. Candle in the wind 12. Saturday Night’s alright for fighting (duet with Anastacia) 13. I’m still standing 14. Don’t let the sun go down on me 15. I guess that’s why they call it the blues (with Mary J Bilge)
