Katy Perry is the buzz girl in the music business at the moment. There is so much hype about her, good and bad and this is one of the reasons why I decided to buy her debut album, One of the boys. Add to that the fact that she won Best New Act at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards and Best International Female Artist at the 2009 BRIT Awards I was quite excited to listen to the album.
What I love about Katy is that she has a really kooky, unconventional style and just seems like a very fun girl. She has a very fun sense of dress and some of her stage costumes that she wears are really glittery and exciting and I would love to have the opportunity to wear something like that. She is also quite controversial as well which I think is always good when it comes to a recording artist. She grew up in quite a strict household, her parents were pastors and was not allowed to listen to mainstream music, just gospel music, so when she releases songs entitles, ? I kissed a girl? and ?ur so gay? she was always going to court controversy. The last song especially, with religious and gay leaders being not too please with the conurtations of the words.
Katy Perry?s real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson and she was born on 25th October 1984. She is an American recording artist. To me her music is very catchy and pop like and definitely something you really sing along too. Most of her songs tend to have quite catchy lyrics and it?s usually about boys and relationships, issues like that. I think the album probably appeals to a younger audience but is quite upbeat and fun and perfect if you want something for the CD player to keep you in a cheery, bright mood. I find most of the songs on the album quite fast paced and full off quick, witty lyrics that you learn quickly and love singing along with.
Like I said, One of the Boys is her debut album and was released on 17th June 2008. As of February 2009, the album has sold over 800,000 copies in the United States. The album has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Her breakthrough single was the very fun, very catchy, ?I kissed a Girl.? In it she basically sings about kissing a girl, that it felt wrong and right at the same time and if her boyfriend would approve or not. This single was released on May 6th 2008 and reached number one in America where it stayed for seven weeks and has since topped the charts in over 20 countries including the United Kingdom. Another song to look out for on the album and one of my favourites is ?Hot N Cold?, a fun song that has lots of contradictory lyrics and is a good tune. The rest of the album is as follows: 1. I kissed a girl 2. Waking up in Vegas 3. Thinking of you 4. Mannequin 5. Ur so Gay 6. Hot N Cold 7. If you can afford me 8. Lost 9. Self Inflicted 10. I?m still breathing 11. Fingerprints And a bonus track of I Kissed a Girl, the rock version.
The album cover features a photo of Katy lounging on a sun lounger in short shorts and a cut off top with a big floppy hat, looking as kooky as ever. Behind her is a white picket fence and the CD itself has a big print of a strawberry on it. The insert inside the CD lists all the words to her songs. I really like it when they do that so you can sing along or attempt to learn the words. It also has a few other photos of Katy in there too.
All in all, definitely a fun album that I would definitely recommend.
