If you've heard of Katy Perry, the chances are you've heard her tracks "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot N Cold". These songs were huge in 2008, and personally I think that some of the songs on the album are alot better lyrically and they show off her vocal ability alot more than those singles she released. There are twelve songs on the album and all of them are great in their own way, although I remember that I had to listen to some of them a few times before I fell in love with them. She has the "chick rock" mixed with "popstar" thing done perfectly, but is not your typical sickly sweet popstar that you hear in the charts such as Avril Lavigne or Kelly Clarkson, because she has her own style inspired mainly by 1950s pinup mixed with a fruit bowl. She is unique to look at and definitely has her own style of songwriting too. There is a diverse mix of sad, lonely but still strong songs such as "Lost", which was written about waking up after a huge night out and feeling hungover and alone, and cheesy but fun pop songs such as "One of the Boys" which is great to sing along to and "If You Can Afford Me" which as quoted by Katy during her life perfomance, is "about girls who don't give their vaginas away for free!". Track number 5, Mannequin is guaranteed to get stuck in your head (in a good way) for a long time because of the catchy chorus, and although not her best song lyrically, it makes up for it with the tuneful beat, remeniscent of the music that plays on "The Sims". My personal favourite track on the album is "Thinking of You". It is a song that Katy Perry wrote completely alone and you can tell that she is 100% sincere both when she sings it on the album and when you see her perform it live. You can almost feel her pain when you listen to it, especially closer towards the end when she comes to the part where the lyrics say "Oh won't you walk through and burst in the door and take me away?" which every girl can relate to at some point in her life! The track "Ur So Gay" is about boyfriends who spend more time doing their makeup than their girlfriend as opposed to being homophobic as it is purely tongue in cheek and fun rather than using it as a derogatory term and genuinely being horrible towards gay people. It is a fun, singalong track about man hating that again, every girl can relate to at some point. The last track, Fingerprints, signs the album off in a way that is guaranteed to make you remember her name and want to play the album again. As she says in the lyrics, she is leaving her fingerprints on you. It is a great song about living your life rather than "sitting on the sidelines watching it pass you by" and is one of the catchiest on the album and one of the ones that make you want to get up and dance. One of the others that is similar in the way that it makes you want to get up and dance and sing along is "Self Inflicted", it is a typical pop song with a big chorus but with a catchy guitar rhythm behind it and a strong drum beat. Katy knows how to mix catchy pop with rock music and bring in people with all kinds of music tastes. The cover and album art is lovely, very 1950s pin up inspired, as mentioned before. It is very unique and shows off Katy's individual fashion taste and although she is not wearing a huge amount of clothes (which will impress her male fans), it is not at all distasteful).
