With Badly Drawn Boy shunning LA in favour of a Manchester studio and with Andy Votel back at the production helmOne Plus Oneis a wry, self-mocking and exquisitely personal album that finds Gough re-evaluating the sudden fame that found him working with Joan Collins, recording soundtracks and residing in California.The opening title track sets the mood with Gough exhaustedly intoning "Back to being who I was before/ Open up your door/ Give me some peace/ Hold me now/ Everybody is waiting outside." Other highlights include the playfully clumsy rhythms of "Four Leaf Clover" and the epic and ingenious "Holy Grail", the latter coming complete with weaving flute, children's choir, pounding piano and lyrics able to break a heart at half a listen. Although this is album is still good in its own right, unfortunatley it doesnt compare to his previous albums (even the about a boy soundtrack is better - which is really saying something!). It comes across as slightly 'bland', which, for an album from the man we all know and love for his upbeat crazy and unusual style is quite disappointing. It definately grows on you after a few listens but you have to be in a fairly sombre mood to want to put it on in the first place! The lyrics, are of course, of an amazing standard, which is to be expected, but its the music that lets the entire album down. One for the true drawn boy fans only!

Though Damon Gough (AKA Badly Drawn Boy) appears to have rather poor math skills, his fourth album, ONE PLUS ONE IS ONE, reveals that the British singer/songwriter still has a way with beautiful melodies. Formerly hailed as the UK's answer to Beck, Gough has reined in many of his earlier musical eccentricities, streamlining his sound to resemble an English version of Elliott Smith, minus the extreme melancholy of that late performer. (The record is dedicated, in part, to Smith.) Driven primarily by piano and acoustic guitar, ONE PLUS ONE is largely the work of Gough alone, and these pared-down arrangements serve his songs better than the over-the-top pop settings of 2002's HAVE YOU FED FISH "Easy Love" is a gentle, flute-accented ditty, and "This Is That New Song" possesses a stately, string-laden grace that belies its cheeky title. In fact, throughout the record, the quietest moments are often the finest, proving that subtraction, rather than addition, is Gough's strongest suit.
