Recently I wrote a review explaining how my interest in country and western music was kindled by the songs of Garth Brooks, well I’ve bought one or two more C.D’s of the same genre since then. One of my gripes about the music of this type is because in Britain, it is a relatively small but very loyal market, seldom do I seem to find country and western music at sale prices and £15 seems expensive to splash out on the off chance that it may appeal to me. However I did find George Strait’s ‘One step at a time’ (incidentally Garth mentions him in the song ‘Aint going down til the sun comes up‘) for about a fiver so I thought I’d take a chance. I had heard of George, new he was massive in America, but couldn’t recall ever having heard any of his songs.
Facts about George Strait I have found out in the mean time.

His singing career has extended well over twenty years and he’s had more than fifty number ones in the country and western charts in America. Former President George Bush on George Strait at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, March 3rd, 2002 said “Everybody at the show loves him, everyone in Texas loves him and everyone across the country loves his music. And I can tell you, he’s just as great a guy in person as he is up here on this stage.”

On hearing George for the first time that I could remember, I realised my money had been well spent, I really did like his voice and it made me feel pleasantly relaxed. The songs on this particular C.D I would probably think may not be the best he’s ever done, but never the less I’ve listened to them over and over again and they have grown on me. I particularly like to listen to George when I am alone, when the guitars and his creamy rich voice de-stresses me and set me up again to face life’s traumas.
And so to ‘One step at a time’, a ten track album. 1. I just want to dance with you. 2. One step at a time. 3. True 4. Remember the Alamo. 5. Maria. 6. We really shouldn’t be doing this. 7. Why not now. 8. That’s the breaks. 9. Neon row 10. You haven’t left me yet.
My favourites.. At three. I just want to dance with you. (Roger Cook, John Prine) A song that moves along at a nice pace and somewhat typically a country and western love song.
In at two. You haven’t left me yet .(Dana Hunt, Kent. M. Robbins) This ones about a man who is going through a break up with his partner / wife but everywhere he turns in his home there are reminders of her. A sad song giving food for thought.
The top spot. Neon Row. (Jimmy Jay, Donny Kees) Another sad song about a wayward woman searching for excitement but only being used by men along the way. I’ve listened to this song many times and it still makes me ponder.
