One Step Beyond, was actually one of the first albums I ever owned (actually it may have been my first), yes way back in the days of “vinyl LP’s” (what are they? I hear half the CD obsessed, young-uns say), and was the LP that put Madness on the road to stardom and mega-fame.
Having listened to the album for many a year, I just had to get the CD version, as I much preferred the early Madness, to the later, more poppy version of the group, the album was released in 1979, in the midst of the Mod/Ska/Two-tone era, yes you know, when everyone seemed to be walking around in Parka’s, Two-tone trousers and Suede shoes, and to me, this album is an excellent one and I still often find myself putting it on, and listening to the excellent tracks.
The CD has fourteen tracks, they are listed as below:
1 One Step Beyond 2 My Girl 3 Night Boat to Cairo 4 Believe Me 5 Land of Hope and Glory 6 The Prince 7 Tarzans Nuts 8 In the Middle of the Night 9 Bed and Breakfast Man 10 Razor Blade Alley 11 Swan Lake 12 Rockin’ in A’ 13 Mummy’s Boy 14 Madness 15 Chipmunks are Go
I can’t actually remember if there was this many tracks on the LP itself, or if there are added tracks on the CD version, but all the same, that old late 70’s early 80’s feel is there, all the tracks are very listenable, and suit virtually anyone, with their mixture of fun and Ska influenced music.
The one thing I noticed about the CD version, for some reason, the track Madness, is not actually mentioned on the cover, but I can assure you, it is on the CD, strange.
A bit like the Specials (another massive group of the same genre/era), Madness to me, seemed to go too commercialised and lost their raw, nutty boy sound, after this Album was a massive success, but all the same, they went on to become one of the biggest and possible best known groups this country has ever produced.
Some of my favourite tracks on this CD include the excellent “Night Boat to Cairo”, with its excellently catchy lyrics and music, “One Step Beyond”, the ultimate skinhead dance record, who can remember going to their school disco’s and totally freaking out to this track? (Come on, I know your sitting there smirking at the memories) and the Peach of the Album “In the middle of the Night”, which told us the story of the knicker thief/underwear taker, dirty old George. There is also their own instrumental version of the classical track “Swan Lake” and the absolutely nutty track, “Tarzans Nuts”.
All in all, this is a very enjoyable CD, and as I have already said, would suit most music listeners, especially those of us, who like to reminisce and look back to their youth.
One Step Beyond
Hey you, don’t watch that, watch this This is the heavy, heavy monster sound The nuttiest sound around So if you’ve come in off the street And you’re beginning to feel the heat Well listen Buster You’d better start to move your feet To the rockin’est, rock-steady beat of Madness One Set Beyond
One step beyond One step beyond One step beyond
Now come on folks, lets stop the dancing around the room, and just go out and buy it, I promise you, you’ll love it.
Advantages: Unique, wonderful pop, great videos Disadvantages: None
...monster sound of Madness ... one step beyond...”
Madness were one of a bunch of bands that emerged as part of the 2-Tone ska explosion in 1979, but they went on to be one of the most memorable and productive pop bands of the 1980’s.
In October 1979, after having one hit on 2-Tone with the engaging The Prince single, the band signed to Stiff Records and released a second single and a debut album, both entitled One Step Beyond. The single stayed ... ...while the album, produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, reached number 2 and stayed in the Top 75 for 78 weeks altogether. The cover displayed the distinctive Madness train - a combination of the nutty dance and a moving train image, their trademark for years to come.
It was a remarkable album, capturing the Madness mood to perfection, even without the visual prompt of the memorable videos with which they were to embed themselves in the hearts ...

Advantages: A collection of wonderful songs & boppy tunes :-) Disadvantages: None
One Step Beyond was released in 1979 & features their huge hits One Step Beyond, My Girl & Night Boat To Cairo, all classics that stand the test of time so well & are still just as good these days as they were at the time ! The saxaphones, heavy beats & Suggs' chirpy tones all merge into a distinctive style which is so recognisable. My personal favourite track on this album is Swan Lake, based on the Tchaikovsky suite, but with a great rock beat, ...

Album Notes: Madness were at the forefront of the UK ska revival at the end of the 70s, very much a regional thing. Madness were very London and they soon shed the two-tone image and became one of the most consistent UK chart groups of the following decade. This debut shows both sides, from the excellent blue beat signature tune "Chipmunks Are Go!" and a first class cover of Prince Buster's "One Step Beyond" to their own masterful pop, and in particular the highly polished "My Girl". What Lindisfarne are to Newcastle, and Fairport Convention are to Cropredy, so Madness are to Finsbury Park.
