The main surprise about this album is that Bon Jovi have waited so long to actually release album but unfortunately I found this quite a disappointment. Now we all know that most classic ‘live’ albums like Thin Lizzy’s ‘Live and Dangerous’ have nearly as many studio overdubs as their ‘studio’ versions, but at least they captured the feel of actually being at one of the bands gigs.
The problem I have with this album is the decision to use different recordings of various songs from a range of different concerts, and there is an annoying edit gap of a couple of seconds between each track. This robs the album of all sense of being a live album in the sense of a recording of a concert, and rather just sounds like a collection of live tracks taken from B-sides. In fact a number of the tracks on the album have actually appeared on previous single flip sides!
As for the music, yep most of the big hits are there with a few notable by their absence (Bed of Roses, Always) and although they’re all well played and recorded it still feels very stop-start with no flow to the album.
Having seen Bon Jovi live I know they’re a great band to see in the flesh, but I can’t help but think that actually recording ONE gig or even two and properly editing it together would have resulted in a better representation of the BJ live show rather than a rather haphazard collection of tracks that are feature on ‘One Wild Night’.
Most fans will love it, but most will agree that it could have been better
