LOVE WON'T WAIT
This song was written by Madonna even though she isn't credited. Shep Pettibone is mentioned as producer and writer though.
It's a great catchy song - the sort of mid-tempo tunes Gary seems to find difficult to write - and it entered the charts at number one in 1997.
...yearning ballad.
OPEN ROAD
The title track is about Gary's journey. It's loosely based on the poem/phrase "No man is an island". This is a rather dramatic tune which reached the Top 10 in 1997.
Gary claims to be "drowning in" his "autocratic ways". I'm sure there's an Irish sounding flute in this song somewhere as well. It's a candid account of self-discovery. Good stuff. more
When Take That split in 1996, Gary went on to make 2 solo albums and did a few tours, before deciding to become a full time writer (recent hits include "Guilty" by Blue). "Open Road" was the first of his 2 albums. It's probably only available second-hand or from an internet site.

SO HELP ME GIRL
A cover of a Country and Western song, this reached number 7 in 1997, if I remember rightly. It certainly went into the Top 10. It was a decent effort and the song is about how sometimes we fall in love when we don't want to.
MY COMMITMENT
A sloppy ballad and boring in places. This is no more than a filler in my opinion. Even the talents of Diane Warren can't save it. Gary's voice is the only good thing on this track. The song isn't very good at all.
HANG ON IN THERE BABY
A good cover of the Johnny Bristol track but it's not as brilliant as the Curiousity version. Gary re-recorded it as a B-side with Rosie Gaines and that was also good. I admit I always laugh when Gary sings "virgin" for some reason.
ARE YOU READY NOW?
An average slow-ish song. The same themes as usual.
EVERYTHING I EVER WANTED
Again, another typical Gary song. Not very inspiring. Bland, it doesn't even inspire any offence.
I FALL SO DEEP
This sounds like another country tune but this time it's not a cover version.
LAY DOWN FOR LOVE
This is probably the best track on the album. It's a funky, much faster song that you would expect. Gary is in command here. "Don't you think we've got some talking to do?...Don't tell me it's over, cos it's not ever yet".
FOREVER LOVE
That long, stirring ballad, which has no chorus! It was number one in 1996 and the beginning always reminds me of Whigfield's "Close To You". It's a bit of a tear-jerker. "In a minute I'm needing to hold her, in an hour I'm cold, cold as stone, when she leaves it gets harder and harder, to face life alone".
NEVER KNOW
This reminds me slightly of Take That's "Holding Back The Tears" on the "Nobody Else" album. Another yearning ballad.

ALWAYS
Another love song typical of this album. A disappointing ending.
The whole album could have been so much more exciting. Good singing but the material was sadly lacking in places. More "Lay Down For Love" type of tracks would have helped.
The album cover is black and white featuring a rather alarming close-up of Gary's face. I don't like the font on the album in-lay booklet but there's plenty of information in it.
This album was also released in 1998 in the USA and reviews seemed to suggest it was well received and actually had a better track-listing than the UK version. I haven' t heard it but I'd like to. A song called "Superstar" seems to have gotten the best reception.
Advantages: You could buy it to laugh at? But otherwise...none. Disadvantages: It's the worst record in history.
I was never a Take That fan, and I am not a Gary Barlow fan either! What is wrong with this man? Why can't he just give up? No one buys his music, and this song is just the pits. Take That were rubbish, and Gary Barlow is rubbish. So Robbie Williams took off, and became very famous and well known, but just because Robbie is good, doesn't mean Gary Barlow is going to be good. Ok, so he was lead singer in Take That, and when they split up everyone ... ...five that would carry on a solo career, but things changed, and they went well for Robbie and not for Gary...so Gary mate, give up! This song is rubbish, and if you wanna make some money, start working on a cruise ship, and maybe you'll get spotted by the BBC. ...

Advantages: There are some AMAZING songs to be heard Disadvantages: Many songs simply sound like album fillers
...gems on the album including Open Road and My Commitment, however, the rest of the album leaves much to be desired. Gary's voice is amazing and a lot of effort has been put into this album which you can clearly tell. I feel the problems possibly arose due to Gary slipping out of his comfort zone and being in a negative place personally. ...

...own. How wrong they were.
Open Road should have been called "Middle of the road" it is just so boring. He hasn't really written anything different from any of the stuff he did for TT. Even the couple of covers he has on this album sound like the rest.
I think that Gary just writes and records music for himself, it isn't marketable but it is what he likes. I am really disappointed that Gary hasn't made it as a solo artist. He could so easily write ...

It turned out that Them 3 songs would be the only 3 I'd ever listen to twice & more. I let the album play & just wasn't impressed at all. Too many similar sounding songs. I read about the first single release in the US 'So Help Me Girl'
If that's an attempt to crack the US chart, maybe it should be 'So Help You Gary.' ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Open Road - Gary Barlow"
Advantages: Lots of great songs that don't normally appear on compilation albums Disadvantages: Just a couple of weaker songs that don't fit in
classics include Berlin?s ?Take my Breath Away? (I challenge you to hear it without thinking of Tom Cruise in his aviators!), Cher?s ?Just Like Jesse James?, The Pretenders? ?Back on the Chain Gang?, ?Jesse?s Girl? by Rick Springfield, and Mr. Mister?s ?Kyrie? (inexplicably sampled by GaryBarlow on his ?OpenRoad? single!).
There are slightly more tracks on disc two which, for me, are often subjected to the ?skip? button. Namely, the whingey ?Carrie? by Europe, ?Amazed? by Lonestar ? which for me is a blatant rip-off of Bryan Adams? ?Heaven?, the irritating ?Footloose? by Kenny Loggins, and ?Let?s Go Crazy by Prince and ?Living in America? by James Brown, neither of which seem to fit in with the rest of the album. As they are both at the end of disc two, it does appear that they have been included as fillers, which is a shame, as I can ...

Album Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (1/16/98, p.70) - "...The ex-Take That singer matches his flutteringly clear voice to impeccably formed bubblegum soul melodies on his first solo effort. Barlow's idea of soul may have more to do with Wham! than with Otis Redding. But what he lacks in depth he makes up for in sweetness..." - Rating: B+
