Here is guitar-based music at an extremely high level indeed.
This is the second album released be this alternative three piece and it only goes to extend there reputation as being one of England best new bands.
The album starts off with New Born, which is a well-crafted piece, which shows Matthew Bellamey putting together a great riff that is backed up by the usual high standard of Chris Wolstenholmes bass lines, this is the kind of song you can put on while getting ready to go out as it gives you a good jolt of adrenaline.
Next up is Bliss after the initial pulse of New Born this track brings you back to a normal pace again and with some fine keyboard work this is again a gem of a song and after a few plays will become a firm favourite.
Third up is Space Dementia another slower paced piano piece here and with Matthew singing in such manner as a wounded animal (hurt but still able to inflict pain of his on) it can give you Goosebumps in an instant, a great track indeed.
And then comes Hyper Music an up tempo track with some solid drum beats provided by Dominic Howard, one of my favourite tracks on the album that grows upon you with every listen.
Distortion comes followed be a great riff and this is the signal that Plug In Baby has started, my favourite track on the album and in my top Three of Muse tracks, this is just such a pumping track that you can’t help but get the feeling of “I can do anything while listening to this track”. And is well complemented by the two tracks it is sandwiched between.
Track Five is called Citizen Erased and again starts of with a great piece of guitar work and then kicks into a thumping bass and drum beat that has a touch of melancholy to it that is then enhanced by the great vocals.
Micro Cuts starts off with a similar feel as Bliss but never seems to capture me as much as the earlier track. The track while still being good doesn’t feel like it should be an album track maybe a b-side for a single release.
Screenager starts with a swaying feel to it and could very well be a track from a David Lynch film, Matthews vocal talents do come through in the track rather well and is a laid back track that still has the dark undercurrents I come to expect from a Muse track.
Darkshines is track number Nine and again has a dazed feel to it in the beginning and then kicks into a stunning chorus, an ambitious song that sits rather well with me as I’m sure it does with other Muse fans.
The next track is called Feeling Good and is a cover of the classic Nina Simone track, Muse give their twist to it without going off of the path too much, good version indeed
Megalomania is the final track on the album; the track itself has a church organ feel very large and overpowering at times but still comforting all the same, not the best track the band have done and I personally would have preferred this not to be the final track.
The cd also has an interactive feature called Muse-TV. Here you will find exclusive backstage goings on as well as live footage from shows recorded on their European tour, you can see also the videos for their singles, and this is a nice touch to the disc, as does the inlay artwork along lyrics.
This is certainly one of the cds that is perched next to my player ready for action; anybody who likes guitar alternative bands will love this album as it has been compared to work by Radiohead as yes I can see aspects in that.
Final note great album and compliments the preceding album Showbiz go buy it.
Please note this is an import of the cd and the uk track listings are the same accept Feeling good is track number Eight and the rest of the tracks follow the same as my import.

I love the Muse. I take their CD to work, so I'm making the best pizzas listening to the best music! And what a great disadvantage you've listed there, not many ops can have that said about them hey! Dr.A ;-) in fact, I'm actually listening to them now.

I adore Muse. I went to see them not that long ago and we were gobsmacked - that boy can SING. Not many people can sing note perfect live, but boy can he!!! Thanks. Great op again. Clare
Advantages: Expands musical soundscape for non-believers Disadvantages: May take a few listens to really absorb and enjoy
