Classically trained flaotist Ian Anderson's five-piece band Jet5hro Tull spans more than half a century of live performance and disc releases so if you are not familiar with its work then this collection of twelve landmark recordings is a good place to start.
The band burst onto the record buying public with the first band of this CD, Living In The Past, risking the first 5/4 time signature ever to be released on a single. Jethro Tull's classical background brought a lot of innovation like this to rock music and their carefully worked out and often fully music scored pieces are peppered with complex times signatures, c.everly interlaced instrumental work and vocal poetry that now labels any band employing these forms as 'prog rock'.
The sound of jethro Tull could be compared to crossing Cat Stevens with Family. There is both softness and loudness, contemplation and emotion, parody and originality in the band's work from its bluesy beginnings through the folk-rock period to the present world music influenced work.
The number Aqualung from the LP of the same name (remember those 12" spinning black vinyls?) arepresents their most critically aclaimed album and tracks 10 and 12 of this album come from the band's spoof concept album Thick As A Brick which, in its original vinyl LP form came packaged with a 16-page newspaper (concept albums gave as much weight and importance to the packaging as to the actial disc and its musical contents).
Jethro Tull continues to perform and record new work and it is a bandwhose members have stayed together as a working partnership in amicability much longer than most.
Jethro Tull are probably one of the most underestimated bands in the world. They have written some great albums over the years and have also inspired people like Brian May. The band has had many different line up changes over 30 plus years but Ian Anderson has always remained the mysterious and charismatic lead singer & multi-instrumentalist. I think this compilation shows the sheer power and diversity of one of Britains greatest progressive rock ... ...Rock, Blues and Hardrock. Ian Anderson has created his own style in playing the flute.
The compilation contains 12 tracks.
1. Living In The Past (A great guitar riffs and flute work, rock blues combo)
2. Agualung ( Great track, heavy guitar riff)
3. Too Old To Rock N Roll Too Young To Die (Quirky rock track)
4. Locomotive Breath (Reminds me of Born To Be Wild)
5. Skating Away On The Edge Of A New Day (Nice Ballad, Folk Rock)
6. Bungle In The ...

Advantages: great bunch of JT's finest Disadvantages: could have been a doubler
I bought the JethroTull ‘OriginalMasters’ CD (single CD) just before Xmas’00 and it has been a regular feature on my car CD multiplayer ever since in between Lauren Hill, David Gray and Coldplay. It can be picked up for less than a tenner from HMV or FreeServe Audiostreet (postage free).
Bit of a blast from the past you might say. As I was a JT fan as a very young teenager – no really I was. I had a strange but 70’s unashamedly eclectic taste for JT, T-Rex, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Genesis, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Jeffersons Aeroplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Lindisfarne, Joni Mitchell…..oh yes and Slade and Mungo Jerry would you beleieve…..it all comes rushing back like a seventies ‘technicolor replay’ ...

ORIGINAL MASTERS contains songs from 1969-77. All songs written by Ian Anderson. Anyone who owned a radio in the 1970s knows most of these songs by heart. A comprehensive retrospective of the career of Jethro Tull, this collection gathers the group's big hits and fan favorites, while also including early chestnuts that may not be familiar to listeners who weren't there the first time around. Showcasing an eight-year period during which the group rose to international prominence, ORIGINAL MASTERS includes at least one song from nearly every year of Tull's steady rise, from 1969's "Living in the Past" to the title track of 1977's SONGS FROM THE WOOD. This is an ideal set for people who want to skim the cream off the top of the Tull songbook. All the essential songs are here--"Aqualung," "Locomotive Breath," "Bungle in the Jungle" "Skating Away," etc., but some of the other choices provide valuable historical perspective. Early songs such as the impassioned "Witch's Promise" from 1970's BENEFIT show off the unique sound Tull possessed before 1971's AQUALUNG transformed them into a monster rock band.
