Advantages: Cherkassky playing at his best in wide range of solo works

...played on the piano, if at all. It is actually a selection of five pieces by Lully, not originally published as a suite, but subsequently assembled into a suite, and reordered by Cherkassky. Cherkassky articulates these early pieces beautifully, bringing out the various voices of the counterpoint with great delicacy and beautiful phrasing. His playing of the ornaments (trills, mordents etc) is especially captivating. He then plays a short piece by Mendelssohn with the light fantasy touch which is required. Here is Mendelssohn back in the same world as the fairies in his famous Midsummer Night's Dream. The centrepiece of this recital is Tchaikovsky's rarely performed Grand Sonata. Cherkassky is one of a small number of pianists who bring this sonata to life (Pletnev is another) and make it sound like a masterpiece. This piece... Read review

Review of Return Of The Jedi (The Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition) - Original Soundtrack by

Advantages: A worthy finale to a magnificent musical journey
Disadvantages: Some new themes not as strong, early scenes fairly dull and latter an half editorial mess

...Nek scene even worse in his Special Edition by replacing the original song with "Jedi Rocks", a hideous pop/rock song, composed by Jerry Hay, that simply has no place in a Star Wars movie and stands completely apart from the musical identity of the Star Wars universe (what the HELL was Lucas thinking?). Also the ewoks are given a few tribal songs "Ewok Feast/Part of the Tribe" and the original finale before the end credits, replaced by Williams with the "Victory Celebration" for the Special Edition. This is another piece that, while being better than the original, sounds a little too new (being more inclined towards world music) to mesh well with the older score, the "End Title" break being particularly clunky. After venting so much about what is wrong with this score, let's now see what's good, and there is still a lot of it... Read review

Gorgeous, poetic and compelling

Advantages: Great sound quality, beautiful songs
Disadvantages: A couple of slightly weaker songs

..., the audience quiets down very quickly and they're hardly heard throughout the rest of the CD. The track begins slowly, gently and then comes in a little more forcefully with the drums until it hits full pace and the electric guitar really begins to sing. It's orchestrated very differently to the original version on 'Caravane' and I have to say I like this version better! As the original 'Funamble' winds down an album, so this one builds it up. It's an absolutely fantastic opening track, really sets the mood and gets the blood pumping ready for the rest of the album. 'La Route de Nuit' This is a lovely ballad, beautifully sung. In this song I find Raphael's voice reminiscent of James Blunt, but his style is so different and the gorgeous French music gives his voice an altogether different flavour.
