celebrity to find herself signed to a major label and making thoughtful, better-heeled studio albums that were critical favourites but commercial anomalies in the country market where she was initially positioned. This 1993 project finds her returning to her roots, reunited with the producer behind her earlier folk triumphs, Jim Rooney. Taking its title from Truman Capote's first novel,Other Voices, Other Roomsis a gentle but whip-smart anthology of excellent songs from acknowledged masters (Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Woody Guthrie, the Carter Family, the Weavers, Gordon Lightfoot) and lesser-known but hardly less-skilled writers including Kate Wolf, Frank Christian and Vince Bell. Griffith's clear-eyed vocals and unswerving intelligence are well served by members of her own band, augmented by vocal cameos from a roomful of fellow folk veterans including Prine, Arlo Guthrie, the Indigo Girls and John Gorka, among others. --Sam Sutherland

Advantages: A great central performance from Natalie Portman. Disadvantages: Wishy-washy characterisation and weak writing.
and golden tones. Meanwhile his relationship with Anne is chillier and more pragmatic as her rape and their cold wedding and coronation with disembodied sweeping choral music illustrate. So it's no surprise when their marriage begins to unravel, though we don't see much of them as a couple. Chadwick sums up the politicking and intrigue with a few short scenes that show the Thomases Howard and Boleyn plotting in darkened rooms and treating the women like pawns in their game and various people spying on events without speaking. It adds a certain frisson to events, but the film feels predictable because we all know what will happen to Anne in the end. In conjunction with the way she plays herself off against her sister, the film feels like a hundred-and-fifteen minutes of a Tudor soap opera.
The production design is exquisite, particularly ...
The others, is a film starring Nicole Kidman as Grace a woman whose husband has gone to fight in the war. She is caring for her two children who both suffer from a severe form of 'photophobia'. With which when subjected to any stronger light than a gas lamp, they get covered in blisters and sores.
But all is not what it seems in this ghostly tale, which devotes the whole film (bar the last few minutes) to just seven people. Firstly we have Grace herself, portrayed to perfection by Nicole Kidman. She is with her two children a girl named Ann (played by Alakina Mann) and her brother Nicholas (played by James Bentley).
Three house workers soon join them: whom Grace readily employs. These are in the form of: Fionnula Flanagan as the housekeeper/nanny, Elaine Cassidy as the mute dogsbody, and the comical Eric Sykes, playing it dead ...
Advantages: Very well set out story, full of twists and turns Disadvantages: Cant think of any
Believe it or not I read this one from start to finish on a beach in Jamaica and I got so immersed in it that I practically lost 2 days of my holiday, I could just not put it down.
It does start off sort of weird but you soon forget about that as you end up practically getting inside the main characters head and experiencing the events from his perspective. I wont spoil it for you because to give you anything other than the vaguest outline of the story would really give the game away but I will tell you that the book was inspired by an elderly friend of James Herbert who used to work at a hospital in London. She apparently entered an unmarked ward and was confronted with numerous cots containing very badly deformed babies but nobody could give her any explanation as to who they were or what happened with them.
The book goes on to ...

Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (4/13/93, pp.62-64) - 3 Stars - Good - "...a reverential nod to old friends....for songwriters like Griffith and her cronies, the lyric is still as mighty as the groove or the guitar riff..." Spin (3/93, p.73) - Highly Recommended - "...Griffith and her guests breathe new life into most of the material...OTHER VOICES is less a folk-song primer than a collection of tunes picked for their musical and lyrical strengths, recorded in such a way as to recapture their innocence..." NME (3/20/93, p.32) - 7 - Very Good - "...as an interpretive artist, Griffith brings alive the characters in every song much in the same way as her hero Woody Guthrie....one of this generation's most important and talented voices..."
