Out in LA is a good way to get a taste of what the early/original Chili Peppers were like. Its made up of a bunch of remixes, a few live tracks, early demos and unreleased tracks.

The first 4 tracks are remixes of songs taken from their albums released in the 80s. Higher Ground, Hollywood, If You Want Me To Stay and Behind The Sun have all had the remix treatment and apart from being a little lengthily, are all quite impressive. You can also find them as B-sides on the earlier singles.

Next comes a live cover version of Jimi Hendix's Castles Made Of Sand, a good tune although I must admit I haven't heard the original to compare the two. Special Secret Song Inside (live) comes next with the sing along chorus that everyone should know. Then a quaint little live number called F.U. (cant think what that stands for?) which is amusing to say the least.

You then get 4 demo versions of songs from their first album (Self titled released 1984). Get Up and Jump, Out in LA, Green Heaven and Police Helicopter. They are all the same as the released tracks except done on a 4 track (or something). You also get a demo of Anthony's Sex Rap to follow.

Blues for the Meister is next in line and is a song written and sung by Flea. Its a jazzy little number that is quite catchy, you also get some trumpet action in this one. The last remaining tracks are all quite short and are all of them fooling about. This is with the exception of What it is, a track recorded by Flea and Anthony years ago. They stayed up late and recorded on their ghetto blaster to show the rest of the band later.

All in all I think this is a really good and informative release. The inlay card has letters written by Anthony and Flea giving you bit of insight into what they were feeling at the time. I wouldn't recommend this as an album but if you are interested in what the Chilis started out like, buy this.
