The London Community Gospel Choir is exactly what it says. A community gospel choir from London.
It is clear that the members of the choir are really into their gospel music as hey sing each song on the entire CD with verve, with joy, with love and with a whole lot of soul. Which, incidentally, is where soul music has its roots, in gospel singing.
There are some "gospel" choirs that just go through the motions and perform the songs in a mechanical way, as if they are singing them by rote. That is most definitely not the case with the members of the London Community Gospel Choir. You just have got to know that they mean every word and every note of what they are singing.
They are real Gospel singers (with a very definite capital G") in the old fashioned religious sense of that word. Indeed, the sleeve notes point out that the purpose of the choir is "spreading the Word through music."
The songs are not all the same. Some are good old-fashioned thumping good Gospel hymn style songs, others are more contemplative and thoughtful, emphasising the search of men and woman to find peace through the words of the Lord.
The singing of the 50 plus strong choir is perfect and the backing music is flawlessly provided. At no point does anyone or anything overpower anyone or anything else, the performances and production are all as near as to perfect as it is possible for humans to attain.
Perhaps real Gospel is not everyone's bag, but I have to say that I like it. I also happen to like the religious music of other faiths and creeds too. Perhaps I shall have to see if it will be possible to review my Krishna Dass CDs at some point in the future.
I was able to find this CD in a sale at a couple of Pounds. For best current prices, check with Ciao's price comparison service.
