Oval - Sten Sandell Trio

Advantages: a true avant garde jazz trio
Disadvantages: maybe too avant garde in some instances

...When we talk about modern jazz piano trios names like brad mehldau and esbjorn svensson quickly emerge to our minds. But no matter how good the former musicians and their trios are, nevertheless they still have a strong influence by artists like bill evans, keith jarrett and even Chick Corea. In the case of the Bad plus however, we can talk about a new powerful almost punk attitude towards piano trios. Imagine the virtuosity of jazz musicians combined with avant grade innovation and high volumed tunes, all combind in one. The original compositions sound so fresh, with all the rhythmic and harmonic complexity combined in a unique way. Trashy beats and excellent piano unisons create a some kind of trancedental atmosphere. And how about a cover of Nirvana's "smells like teen spirit" for jazz trio? Really interesting.... Read review

...Another wonderful Alkaine Trio album this is a must have!! i wasnt disappointed when i bought the album this is one of their finest works. The band definatley havent lost there dark side with songs that remind you of the goddamnit album and crimson. Over & Out and Help me being easily one of the classics! All eleven tracks are amazing from start to finish i havent got anything bad to say about this album i would definately buy this album if you are an Alkaline Trio fan and i would also buy this album if im a fan of good music the san francisco punks have done good once again A welcome back Alkaline Trio album. Although Love Love, Kiss Kiss was a slight cahnge from the Alkaline Trio that we i know and love i couldnt fault it.... Read review

Advantages: Fast paced, lyrics with meaning, classic trio!

...This, being one of The Trios first albums is classic trio. If you like them, this is the one you have to listen to - If you have not heard them before - this is the first album that you should listen to! With classics such as Trouble breathing - one of myu favourites which has a killer intro, this one is not to be overlooked! This album is full of heartfelt lyrics which are filled with emotion, however this album is still punk and it is still dark and is not soppy emo which is unusual but genius and very hard to do! Good music to listen to after you've had a truly awful day/week/month/year! If you are upset or in a bad mood or just feel like listening to some music with catchy tunes - this would be the one to be slipped into the CD player!
