Ozzy and his family are the flavour of the moment, and whilst I know who he is, I can not say that I have ever listened to his music. This album is the first Ozzy album I have listened to, so I can only judge it on it's own merits, and cannot compare it to any of the other albums he has released.

The sound is very commercial, and actually more enjoyable than I ever dared to hope, and the guitar riffs are some of the best I have ever heard, and huge credit must go to Zakk Wyldde, but it is the brilliant bass line played by ex Black Sabbath member, the brilliantly named Geezer Butler, which made me sit up and listen, and they both carry on in the second track, 'I Just Want You', which I imagine is as close to a ballad as I am likely ... more
In my quest to open my mind to new genres of music, I have found myself veering towards rock, and more specifically, Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy and his family are the flavour of the moment, and whilst I know who he is, I can not say that I have ever listened to his music. This album is the first Ozzy album I have listened to, so I can only judge it on it's own merits, and cannot compare it to any of the other albums he has released.
The first track 'Perry Mason' is much mellower than I was expecting. The sound is very commercial, and actually more enjoyable than I ever dared to hope, and the guitar riffs are some of the best I have ever heard, and huge credit must go to Zakk Wyldde, but it is the brilliant bass line played by ex Black Sabbath member, the brilliantly named Geezer Butler, which made me sit up and listen, and they both carry on in the second track, 'I Just Want You', which I imagine is as close to a ballad as I am likely to get from Ozzy. Ozzy's vocals are really strong on this track, and after the second listen it is even more enjoyable.
'Ghost Behind My Eyes' leans more towards ballad than rock, and although Ozzy does not have the best voice in the world, these tracks really make it sound strong, whilst the whole package of this song offers some light relief, as I am expecting the decibel level to rise at any minute, and 'Thunder Underground' seems like it is going to be the song to do it, as the opening guitar riffs threaten a big kick off, but gratefully, it never comes, and whilst this sing is certainly heavier, and full of big drums, it is not just noise, it is a well written and produced track.
'See You On The Other Side' starts off reminding me of a Simple Minds track, but I cannot pinpoint which one. I am really getting into this album now, and it has changed my view of Ozzy's music forever. I am actually starting to sing along with the choruses which is always a good sign. I start to wobble a bit, as the next song is heading more towards the type I was dreading. 'Tomorrow' sounds very much like the limited amount of Black Sabbath material I have ever had cause to listen to, and to be honest it is just too loud and too heavy for me.
'Denial' carries on in the same vein, with Ozzy's voice sounding quite demonic at times, and if I had to choose my least favourite track on the album it would be this one. 'My Little Man' may have been written about his son, I am not too sure, but lyrics like 'Wipe the tears from your tears, and if there's demons who try to take your breath away, you can be sure that my spirit will be standing by your side', sounds like a dead father talking to his son. It is a ballad with a harder edge, and my favourite track on the album.
'Mr Jekyll doesn't hide' is about Ozzy himself, and his alter egos. It is without question the loudest and proudest track on the album, but against my better judgement, I don't actually dislike it that much, and I think that is down to the brilliant guitar playing by Wylde, rather than the song as a whole package. The final track 'Old LA Tonight' features Rick Wakeman (ex Yes member), and it brings the album to a gentle end.
This album was released in 1995, and at the time a lot of people felt like Ozzy had jumped on the commercial music bandwagon, and I am inclined to agree, especially as I quite liked the album! Ozzy has a soft side, and it shows through on this album. I apologise to any Ozzy fans who feel that I have misrepresented his music, but this was how I saw it.
Advantages: Perry Mason is on the CD Disadvantages: Too many fillers
...Perry Mason before, i thought Ozzmosis would be the best place to start.
When i ordered Ozzmosis from Amazon.co.uk i was annoyed that it took longer than usual but I thought that the wait would be worth.
On the cold morning that it arrived in the post, i was greeted by a dull, thought provoking cover, I knew this CD would be memorable, but i wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
The Album Starts off with my favourite Ozzy track, ... ...The lyrics are thought provoking and even when I listen to it in bed, I have a clear picture of what Ozzy is singing about, it's almost enough to set you into a nightmare.
The next track started off similar to Perry Mason, which I thought was a good thing, but when the song got going, it felt like i'd heard it a hundred times before, even if this was actually my first hearing of 'I Just Want You'.
In hope of something more spectacular,i took to ...

Advantages: great guitar performers (Holmes, Wilde, Rhoads) Disadvantages: some of the songs to long and sterile
...are good, and quite frankly Ozzmosis is about as satisfactory as I expected at this stage of his long career. “Old L.A. Tonight” (that’s Rick Wakeman on piano!) provides a pleasingly low-key closer with guitarist Jake Holmes (a former student of Rhoads) in place of Wilde, who had become preoccupied with his own projects...But anyway folks if you can not decide whether purchase this album or not go to store or visit your friend who owns this piece ...

Advantages: Perfect if you want something loud on/ Sounds rather 'Black Sabbath' in places. Disadvantages: Not everybody's type of music
'Ozzmosis' was released in late October 1995, and entered the US charts at number 4, and the UK charts at 22. It was acclaimed as his strongest album in a decade by the press. Ozzy himself was equally as pleased with his effort, claiming that, "It's been like a three year pregnancy that cost a fortune to make!"
Taking shape during various writing sessions, and with writing partners ranging from Motorhead's Lemmy and Steve Vai to old friends Zakk Wylde and Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, Ozzmosis highlighted resilience , both as an artist and a person. Ozzy also stayed cleaning during the making of the album, and seemed to enjoy himself.
'Perry Mason' is the song that got me in to the album and I decided to buy it (from that song alone!). But why buy a single that is almost the price of an entire album? But I am digressing; I went ...

All tracks have been digitally remastered. Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand up next to "Sweet Leaf" and "Symptom Of The Universe" as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in "Ghost Behind My Eyes" and "Denial" are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, "Planet Caravan"ing. Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genre's latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden). Zakk Wylde's huge, raw guitar also plays a major role. He provides scorching solos, lush textures and juicy fills with a muscular tone and minimal effects--the perfect complements to Osbourne's songwriting. But more important than the raging guitars and the big sound is attitude. Ozzy's spunk has indeed rejected retirement. His songs still spew biting commentary at whoever will listen. "Your bulls**t culture licking can't stop the deathwatch ticking/You're only mortal after all," he warns on "Thunder Underground." Ozzy himself may not be immortal, but OZZMOSIS sounds like it is.

Q (10/02, p.132) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Carefully written and better produced [than previous few releases]..." NME (11/25/95, p.47) - 7 (out of 10) - "...Ozzy's career is undergoing something of an Indian summer....OZZMOSIS continues the trend for killer, hard edged commercial delivery and that trademark strained falsetto from hell....this album is as close to the spirit of classic Sabbath as you can get..."
