I am a 65-year-old woman and I like all the normal types of music for my age. Patsy Cline, Old blue eye’s himself Frank Sinatra, that kind of thing. But I recently borrowed a CD from my grandson, Enya – Paint the sky with stars – the best of Enya, and I thought it was absolutely wonderful.
Enya is an Irish lady with a talent for playing a host of instruments, most notably the piano. She has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard and after listening to this album I have asked my grandson to record it on his computer for me, so it can take pride of place in my collection. Below is a description of some of my favorite tracks from it, followed by the full album listing.
Track 1 - Orinoco Flow For anyone who likes Enya, then this will most likely be the song that you will remember the most. My grandson informs me that this song spent no less than 5 weeks as the Uk’s no 1 record on it’s release in the late 1980’s. It is quite a powerful track but also carries a dramatic melody. I wouldn’t say it is my personal favorite on the album but I do still like to listen to it.
Track 2 – Caribbean Blue This is one of the most relaxing songs on the whole album, it’s moody undertow and haunting lyrics are the perfect recipe for sending your entire body to sleep. Every time I listen to this song my body goes all-numb as it really does carry your senses away.
Track 7 – China Roses Again, this track is as relaxing as they come, but this one is slightly deeper than Caribbean blue. It is slower in pace and a little more dramatic, a perfect harmonic song that will leave you breathless every time you listen to it.
Track 10 – Storms in Africa This track is one of Enya’s most famous songs, it often gets used on the soundtracks of films. The one I remember it being on was My Life, staring Michael Keaton and the great Nicole Kidman. This one is more of an angelic humming than a strait forward song, and captures the heart strait from the slow build up right to the powerful energetic ending.
Track 13 – Marble Halls This track is my favorite one on the album, it is one of the slowest and most melodramatic songs on here. I have heard Marble halls on a number of films before and is one of Enya’s most used tracks. This song is mainly about her wonderful voice rather than her music, and makes me feel really happy each time I play it.
Track 16 – Boadicea I love this track to pieces, it is the most haunting song on the album but also one of the most angelic. There are no words to this, just a strange and wonderful humming that sends a tingle down your spine. I don’t know about this modern stuff, but my grandson tells me that this song is the theme tune to a Steven King film called Sleepwalkers.
He also informed me that the song was bootlegged – whatever that means – by the Fugees in a song called ready or not, which apparently reached no 1 a couple of years ago. You young people may already know this but like I said at the beginning of this opinion, I am 65 years old.
Tracks – 1, 3, 4, 5, and 14 are very similar to modern type pop music and will appeal to even the youngest of fans. The album comes in a dark brown case dotted with stars and has a light brown front sleeve and has a picture of the beautiful Enya herself. The inside is decorated with stars and a picture of Enya painting them into the night sky.
The album was released in 1997 and I am told that you could now buy a copy from HMV for under £10. Believe me, it would be £10 well spent.
